    Cauda Equina Syndrome

    Cauda Equina Syndrome is caused by damage to the nerves in the lower spinal cord called the cauda equina. It can result in loss of bowel and bladder control, sexual dysfunction, saddle anesthesia (loss of sensation in the anal/genital region), and weakness or paralysis of the legs. Common causes include lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis, ankylosing spondylitis, and spondylylolisthesis. Diagnosis is usually based on neurological exam and confirmed with MRI or CT scan. Treatment depends on the cause but may involve surgery, steroids, or antibiotics.
