I. HUDDLE
L.O.S.
BALL

QB

LT LG C RG RT

X TB Y FB Z

The Center sets the huddle at 6 yards behind the ball. All players must get into the
huddle as quickly as possible. Be alert for substitutions. Players being subbed for
must not linger in the huddle.

The quarterback stands apart from the huddle, keying the formation - play call from
the sideline. Huddle talk is permissible at this point.

When the quarterback enters the huddle, he is in charge - ALL TALK STOPS!
Everyone must watch and listen to what the quarterback says.

Huddle call Procedure:

1. QB - Give the Formation - Play call - Snap Count:
Formation/Backfield alignment "Strong"
RIGHT - LEFT directional call "RIGHT"
Variations/Motions "ZOOM"
Play Call "DENVER 22"
Snap Count (WR's & CENTER leave) "ON WHITE"
Repeat Snap Count "ON WHITE"

2. Quarterback calls "Ready - Break" to break the huddle. All remaining players
yell "Break," with the QB and HUSTLE to their positions.

3. Leaving the Huddle:

WR's & CENTER leave early
TE goes behind the Line.
I. QB walks up to the Center.
J. RB's fall in behind the QB.

E. SUGAR HUDDLE
LOS
1. The “Sugar Huddle” is formed 1 yard from the ball and is designed to speed the tempo of
the game without rushing the offense. Players will form a cluster, turning their shoulders and
leaning in to listen for the call from the QB who enters from the back.

II. CADENCE
Our cadence has been designed to afford us great flexibility at the LOS. The
ability to snap the ball quickly, late, and with deception have all been included. The
following is an overview of our cadence system.

PRE-CADENCE ALIGNMENT

1. When the interior linemen and Tight End (Y) reach the LOS, they will
arrange their splits, adjust their vertical alignment, and get down in a three
point stance. The TE can shift or adjust his position if the huddle call directs
him to do so. We want to get set quickly so we can make further shifts or
motion adjustments and keep the defense off balance by varying the cadence.

2. The Fullback (F) will be in a three point stance when in the “I” formation
and in a two point stance at all other times. The Tailback (H), X, and Z will be
in a two point stance. In single back formations, the lone back will assume a
two point stance.

3. When we are in “TWO MINUTE OFFENSE” (Army), the interior linemen will
assume a two point stance. All other positions align as previously described.

UNIVERSAL CADENCE

1. This is both a huddle and a no huddle format. The color used will
correspond with the snap count.

RED = 1ST Hut. WHITE = 2 ND Hut.

2. Two sets of words and/or numbers are used. If a specific play is called in
the huddle, “dummy” words/numbers are used in the cadence. These should
be words/numbers we will frequently use as “checks”.

Examples: (Huddle call) Right, Lansing 26, on Red

Red, Red…Liz 939 flat, 939 Flat ….Ready, Hut

3. When more than one play is called in the huddle, the set of numbers use
in the cadence will be the live numbers for the play. This will be usually
indicated by the word “CHECK”. The plays called will be a pass and a run.

Examples: (Huddle Call) Right, PURDUE 628 “Check” DAKOTA

24 , on White

White, White ….Dakota 24, 24… Ready, Hut, Hut

Play Run is Dakota 24…. The run in the “Check” package.

ON “QUICK 1”

1. This is a huddle format. It allows the ball to be snapped with a minimal

amount of verbiage. The quick cadence allows for the use of the “check”
system by inserting the desired play prior to the word “ready”.

Examples: (Huddle Call) Gun Tail Right, Denver 2, On Quick 1.

Ready, Hut (Run Denver 2)

or
Purple, Purple…..Rip 939 Flat, 939 Flat…Ready, Hut
(The play has just been checked to a 3-step drop pass). The color Purple is a
way to check the play called to a pass. We will use this after we learn the
total system.

AUTOMATIC SYSTEM

Our Automatic System is comprised of a variety of ways to change or select

plays at the LOS.

1. Audibles. QB changing the play at the LOS. We have the ability to use
live colors (Purple or Gold) to indicate a run or pass audible, if needed. The
desired play is called at the LOS. The ball will automatically be snapped
on “Quick 1”.

Example: Purple, Purple…Liz 939 Flat, 939 Flat … Ready, Hut

2. Plays called at the line from a huddle call.

Situation where the QB calls 2, or more, plays in the huddle.
According to concept rules, the QB selects the appropriate play at the LOS.
The snap count is on one (Red).

In a mirrored play situation (Example: Denver 2-3 ATL) the QB will

still use the same cadence and call the play in the sequence of numbers:

Red, Red ….. Denver 2, Denver 2…..….. Ready, Hut

a. Check with Me (CWM) - Unique play combination concepts

unique to themselves.

b. AT THE LINE (ATL) - Run concept where the QB locates the down
lineman aligned in the “A” Gap. By rule, the QB will run towards
this player. If no clear “A” Gap player – run the play weak.

c. BINGO – Concept where the QB locates the down lineman aligned

in the “B” Gap. The QB will call the play towards this player. If no
clear “B” Gap player – run the play strong.

d. CHECKS – Run Checks package a specific run called in the huddle

with a designated pass and another run scheme. Pass Checks
package a play-action pass called in the huddle with it’s
complimentary run play.
E. CADENCE ALERTS

1. NO BRAINER – Will be utilized in an attempt to pull a defense off-sides in

a fourth down situation. There will be no offensive play called or run. The
cadence will continue until either a defensive off-sides, delay of game
penalty, or we call time out.

Example: Huddle Call – Right, NO BRAINER

LOS call: White, White… Rip 939 Flat, 939 Flat…. Dover 6, 6….Ready, Hut, Hut,
Check…
Green, Green…Louie 066 Corner, 066 Corner… Ready, Hut…

2. RAINBOW OFFENSE – At times, it will be advantageous to run our

offense without huddling.

a. We will use a 14-15 second tempo.

b. Gives us the ability to change personnel groups on the move.
c. We can stop no huddle at any time.
d. We can execute our entire offense.

Procedure: We will use the universal cadence and the “live” set of
numbers will be pre-determined. After receiving the play
from the sideline…

a. The QB will call the formation (may use motion)

b. Using the universal cadence, the QB will call the play.

Example: (Regular Personnel)

Left – Left….Red, Red…Stay Purdue 628, 628 …Ready, Hut

3. ARMY OFFENSE - Plays called at the line in a fast break, no

huddle situation. Two-minute Offense.

a. Hurry up Two Minute Offense designed to conserve time.

1. Formation is always ACE RIGHT. Tail will be used if TE is in
the game - put strength call into boundary.
2. Snap Count is on “Quick 1.”
3. Play is given immediately before the Count.
4. Line is in their UP Stances.
5. Regular personnel may be used. Any substitute must be
ready to return to the field after that specific play.
Procedure FOR Army Offense:

QB alerts the team that they are in an Army situation.

Execute the called play from the huddle.
Everyone assume Army situation and hustle to the line of
scrimmage.
QB shouts "Army-Army, RIGHT-RIGHT" (or left) to align the
formation. He points to the direction of the call. At the same
time, the QB is looking to the coach for instructions.
R-Back repeats the QB's formation call and also points to the
call.
QB shouts designated play twice, then calls for the snap.
The coach will direct the QB to huddle or call a timeout.
Example:
"ARMY ARMY"
"RIGHT - RIGHT - RIGHT"
"Green, Green….Louie 939 Out, 939 Out…Ready, HUT"
The snap count is on "Quick 1."

4. KILL THE CLOCK PROCEDURE:

a. QB alerts the team that they will line up and spike the ball
to stop the clock by calling “KILL, KILL”.
b. Everyone hustle to the line of scrimmage.
c. QB shouts “KILL-KILL, RIGHT – RIGHT” (or left) to align
the formation. He points to the direction of the call.
d. R-Back repeats the QB’s formation call and also points to
the call.
e. We must be aligned in a legal formation and set for one
count before the ball is snapped.
f. QB calls for snap when everyone is aligned and set. The
cadence is “READY, HUT”.
g. Line will fire out in wedge protection on snap. Move
forward so that ball can be spiked by QB without hitting
you.
h. QB receive snap, step back and spike ball to ground
without hitting another player.

III. RUN GAME NUMBERING NUMBER SYSTEM

Run Game Concept:

All plays between 0-39.

City & State names indicate blocking schemes:

Denver, Bronco, Lansing = Zone
Dakota = Draw
Pittsburgh, Steeler = Power
Colorado = Counters
Oregon = Option
Tampa = Trap

The second digit indicates Point of Attack (POA) (the 4 hole = RT-TE
area)

The first digit indicates ball-carrier.

a. All single digit plays are one back runs (Denver 2).
b. 1 = QB run ( Steeler 16)
c. 2 = TB Run ( Lansing 26 Release)

IV. PASS OFFENSE MECHANICS

A. THREE DIGIT SYSTEM PRINCIPLES AND ALERTS:

Almost every pass in this system is called by using 3 digits.

(Some Passes the 3 digits are assumed: (nakeds, quicks, bullets.)

Numbering of patterns starts on the single receiver (weak) side for X,

Y and Z. Strong and weak for pattern calling is based on numbers of
receivers, not on strength call of formation.

Pass Patterns are called in a consistent order. That order is:

a. Formation Strong Right
b. Protection Roger
c. 3 Digit Pattern 894
d. Primary Back Route Arrow
Huddle Call: Strong Right, Roger 894 Arrow
(Remaining Back must memorize complementary route)

Other Pattern Calling Consistencies are:

a. The single receiver (X, Y or Z) always gets the 1 st digit.
b. The inside receiver (X, Y or Z) always gets the 2 nd digit.
c. The outside receiver to the 2 receiver side always gets the
3rd digit.
d. The primary back route will be called.
e. Patterns are always called starting with the single receiver
side.

EXCEPTIONS:
a. We can also at times call both back routes.
b. Sometimes a single word tells both backs what to do.
Example: Box

TIPS IN LEARNINGTHE THREE DIGIT SYSTEM

a. Know your Formations. Without a thorough
understanding of the formations you will never understand
who gets what digit or back route.
b. Understand the entire pattern concept. That means
understanding the following principles:
a. Realize that whether you are a Back, Weak Side
Receiver, Inside Receiver, Strong Side Outside
Receiver – CHANGES BY FORMATION. If you only
think of yourself as an X, Z, H, Y, TB, FB, you are
making a mistake, because this offense is not
formulated that way.
b. Realize that within the digit system THE DIGITS
CAN HAVE DIFFERENT MEANINGS BASED ON
PASS PATTERNS.

Protection Identification

Roger / Louie = 6-Man Slide Protection

SIFT = 6 Man Protection. Drag/dual to Shade, Bob (Big on Big) Away.

11

VII. FORMATIONS

The offensive base is the "I" formation. A directional call (RIGHT or LEFT) will align
the formation.

- Z: Align to the call, Set one yard off the line according to split rules.
- Y: Align to the call. Set on the line two feet from the tackle. Adjust to a wide split
where appropriate.
- X: Align away from the call. Set on the line according to split rules.
- FB/TB: Align in the "I" formation.
- H: Halfback term. Refers to a TB substitute.
- R: Remaining Back. Used in one back sets.
- U: Second tight end.
- S: Substitute WR for the Tight End.

FB Alignment: "I" Three point stance. Hand is placed 2 yards

behind the QB (feet 4 1/2 yards from L.O.S.). Use two point
stance elsewhere. OFFSET - split the inside leg of the
tackle.

TB Alignment: "I" - Two point stance. Feet are 2 yards

behind the FB (7 yards from L.O.S. or 5 yards from QB).

One Back Set: Two point stance. TB Position (7 yards from

L.O.S.). Adjust to FB position if Belly or Blitz threat.

Shotgun (Gun) Alignment:

QB - Feet at 4 yards from LOS
BACKS - Feet at 5 yards from L.O.S. splitting the outside leg of
the guard.
BACKS - Align to the side that allows you to execute your
assignment.
12

V. FORMATION VARIATIONS AND MOTION

A. Adjustments
Each position (X, Y, Z, FB, and TB) has key words which aligns the
players into different positions. The key words are unique to that position and
adopted by substitution personnel.

B. Motions
The most frequent positions which utilize motion (Z, Y, and TB) have
key words to direct various motions. The key words are unique to that
position and adopted by substitution personnel. Certain positions borrow
terminology from related positions. The attached letter indicates the
difference.

a. FB borrows TB terms - F Fly

b. X borrows Z terms - X Zoom
c. U borrows Y terms - U Rock

There are two huddle call procedures regarding motions. The

snap count for both is on TWO = White.

The base procedure is to place the motion word before the formation
call. This alerts the players that the formation called is the desired formation
and that the motion player initially aligns elsewhere. Example: "ZOOM to
RIGHT OVER" the flanker would initially align in a right formation.

The alternate procedure is to place the motion word after the

formation call. This alerts the players to line up in the formation called and
motion the appropriate player to the desired formation. Example: "RIGHT
ZOOM" the desired formation is RIGHT OVER or RIGHT OPPOSITE.

C. Motion definitions:

Tailback (FB):
Fly - motion to the Left
Jet - motion to the Right.

Flanker - Z (X):
Zap - motion across the football.
Zip - motion in towards the football.
Zoom - motion out from the football.
Zing - motion across the football to a wing position.
Zipper - motion in to the football and then back out.

Wing (refers to any TE or RB in a wing, slot, or Stack-I

position).
Ricky - motion to the Right.
Lucy - motion to the Left.
Rock - motion in and then back out.

FRONT ALIGNMENTS

The fronts are defined as ODD, EVEN, EVEN 8 MAN (4 X 4), STACK,
GOAL LINE, DIAMOND, AND BEAR. The following will cover most of the
defensive fronts we will face for the year.

OKIE ODD - both G’s uncovered. Add the term STACK and the
LB’ers are stacked behind the linemen and the G’s are
still uncovered.
TIGHT/ EVEN – the call side G is covered (head up to outside) and
STACK the Center may or may not be shaded. Could be 7 or 8
man front.

SPLIT ODD – with the call side G uncovered and the weak side
reduced with usually a 3 technique and a 5 technique
6-2/BEAR GOAL LINE – defenses used inside the 5 yard line going in
to score.

DIAMOND AND BEAR – Diamond is a 7 man front with both G’s and the
Center covered and the LB’ers over the tackles and over the center if we
are in one back formations. BEAR – is the same as diamond but with
the TE viced by the LB.
