Algebra 2 Honors 6-5 Transformations of Trig Functions

A Ferris wheel is a ride that consists of seats connected to the circumference of a large vertical wheel. As
the wheel rotates, the riders are moved from the bottom if the wheel to the top of the wheel and then
back again to the bottom. When you first get on a particular Ferris wheel, you are at the bottom, 3 feet
off the ground. Once the Ferris wheel starts, it rotates around its center at a constant rate. Suppose that
it takes you 8 seconds to reach the highest point of the ride, 63 feet off the ground.

1) Think about how you might translate this information to a coordinate-plane trig graph. Make a sketch
of the scenario.
2) Find a function f such that f  t  equals how high in feet you will be off the ground t seconds later.
3) You start at the bottom of the ride. How high off the ground will be 5 seconds after the ride starts?
Answer to the nearest tenth of a foot.
