Gumboro disease – important disease of chickens

IBD is a highly contagious viral disease of chickens that can lead to heavy losses due to direct
mortality, immunosuppression & secondary infections

The pathogen is a non-enveloped double stranded RNA Enterovirus

Gumboro typically effects young chickens 1-6w of age, the primary target organ is the Bursa of
Fabricius where IgM+ immature B-Lymphocytes are the target cells

IBDV is a worldwide endemic disease, appears as vvIBDV or sub-clinical (variant) and almost every
commercial chicken in the world is vaccinated against Gumboro

How do we protect the chickens from Gumboro?
The IBDV is infecting young birds so protection is targeted to protect the birds until 8-9 weeks of age.

Besides biosecurity, vaccination is the most important measure for IBDV control and anti-VP2
antibodies are very effective.

Maternal antibodies will protect young chicks in the first 2-3 weeks of life when their B-lymphocytes
are most vulnerable to IBDV infection.

Breeder vaccination for high levels of maternal immunity, passive immunity, followed by active
immunization of the progeny is an effective mode of protection.

CONCLUSION
The in ovo vaccination with MB-1 of the commercial broilers was able to induce full protection
against a challenge with vvIBDV at 22 days and 36 days of age.

The results of the challenge of the ICX vaccinated broilers of TG04 (challenged at D36) showed
that the vaccination had not induced any level of protection. At 22D challenge it is estimated that
the challenge was at the same time of 2512 replication

 The IBDV ELISA titers, BBWR, BF lesion score, and IBDV
molecular detection data indicated an earlier viral replication in
the MB-1 groups vs. the two Icx vaccines groups in trials 1 and 3
and a similar timing of replication in the MB-1 groups vs. the
TAbic M.B. groups in trials 2 and 4. It appeared that in the
presence of adequate levels of maternal antibodies, the MB-1
replication initiated between 21 and 28 DOA, and not prior to 21
DOA, while the Icx vaccines replication initiated between 24 and
32 DOA.
