Plants
Plants can make their own food as they contain chlorophyll.Food is made in the
plants leaves via photosynthesis.
Most plants have the following:
Roots
Stem
Leaves.
The function of the plant parts are as follows
PART OF PLANT FUNCTION OF THE PART
LEAVES Make food for the plant and allows for gaseous exchange to
happen in the plant via the stomata.
STEM Supports the plant. Sends water and food to all parts of a
plant via phloem and xylem
ROOTS Absorb water and mineral salts from the soil. Anchors the
plant firmly to the ground
FLOWER Develop into a fruit
FRUIT Contains and protects seeds that will grow to become new
plants
LEAF PATTERNS
Toothed edge Entire edge
Stem
Non-woodyWeak stemNeed support
WoodyStrong stemCan stand upright without any support
Plants with weak stems need support to grow well.
Flowers
Can grow singly(Hibiscus) or in clusters(Broccoli)
Roots
Some roots may be swollen due to storage of food here.
Circulatory system
-Transports digested food, water and air to all parts of the body and transports waste
materials away from parts of the body to be removed
-Contains blood, heart, blood vessels
Skeletal system
-Supports the body, gives the body its shape, protects major organs
-Works with muscular system to allow for movement
-Skull, backbone, ribcage, thighbones
Muscular system
Works together with skeletal system to allow for movement
Digestive system
Digests food using enzymes
Main parts
Mouth
-Digestion begins. Saliva, which contains amylase, digests the starch in the food.
- chewing with teeth breaks food into smaller piecesMore ESA Easier digestion
Gullet
-Connects mouth to stomach
Stomach
-produces digestive juices for digestion to take place
- churns the foodMore ESA
Small intestine
- digestive juices produced here
- digested food absorbed into bloodstream via diffusion
Large intestine
-water and mineral salts absorbed from undigested food
Anus
-undigested food discreted
