Abstract:
Earthquake is wave like motion, which is caused by the forces under the earth’s surface layer. There are
many serious implication and destructive consequences of the earthquake. One of the most popular technique to
protect the structure against seismic force is base isolation. Base isolation consists of installing the mechanism, which
decouples the structure from damaging ground motion. In lateral directions, the base of the building is made flexible
which increases the fundamental time period of the structure and in this way the seismic energy is deflected. The
irregular configurations either in plan or in elevation were recognized as the major cause of failures during the past
earthquakes. When these irregular structures are subjected to seismic zone then it becomes even more challenging
for structural engineer. Therefore, it is significant to have clear idea of irregular structure for the engineers.
The present study focuses on the seismic response of multistoried reinforced concrete building, which is
irregular in plan. G+ 13-storey reinforced concrete building with irregular plan of inverted L-shaped is considered for
the seismic analysis. All the frames are subjected to Bhuj Earthquake and Time History analysis is carried out. The
analysis is done for fixed cases and then considering the maximum gravity load coming to the column at the base of
the structure, Lead Rubber Bearing and Friction Pendulum System is designed manually according to code UBC97.
The response for the fixed base structure and base isolated structure is computed numerically.
Based on the data obtained, the study concludes that the seismic response increases with the increase in
irregularity. This increment in the seismic responses is reduced by base isolation. Both the isolator significantly
reduce the seismic response of the structure. From the results, it is also found that the reduction of response is more
in Lead Rubber Bearing than that of Friction Pendulum System, which suggests that Lead Rubber Bearing is more
effective.
