Resolution Blues (2015) Chaz DePaolo

I always think of Chaz DePaolo as one of
those constantly-on-tour bluesmen, playing
slashing electric guitar, singing his heart out,
and whipping audiences into a frenzy. Reso-
lution Blues is different, as DePaolo trades in
his electrified axe for an acoustic guitar. But
he still plays and sings the Blues, although
a number of these songs have an improvi-
sational jazz feel, played in the structure of
traditional Blues chord sequences. In regard
to the jazz element, I’m thinking primarily of
Robert Chaseman’s sweet wailing sax, par-
ticularly on the opening number, “A Love So
Strong.”
DePaolo steps out of the spotlight on this
recording, leaving room for his bandmates to
shine. That would be Clifford McComas on
drums, Hank Kaneshige on bass, Prestine Al-
len on piano, and David Biondo on harmon-
ica, plus the aforementioned saxman Robert
Chaseman. They all know what to do—
chugging away on the beat and the rhythm,
sprinkling piano and honking harmonica in
the gaps. DePaolo himself plays a staccato
rapid-fire percussive acoustic guitar—and
he sings from the heart. The focus here is

not on his guitar virtuosity—dazzling though
it is—but rather on the words and the sto-
ries behind the lyrics. DePaolo grew up in a
tough neighborhood in northern New Jersey.
He’s been through a lot; in “Scars” he sings,
“Scars make us who we are,” and there’s a
lot of truth to that.
Much of the Blues is played up-tempo,
none of that liquor-soaked crying stuff. And
there’s another type of song that I might call
Loose-Limbed Texas Highway Music. I’d
rank “Broken Tales,” “Gunther 414,” and
“Share” in this category. Each hustles along
and each could at any moment break into a
ZZ Top stomp or a Stevie Ray Vaughn guitar
blitz. But Chaz plays it cool, strumming that
acoustic, spicing it up with sharp little runs.
I should mention too that DePaolo wrote all
the songs, both words and music, plus the
arrangements.
This year DePaolo is the headline per-
former at the MOOD Fest in Ogdensburg,
July 9th. Check the MOOD Fest Facebook

 “Com’on, let’s twist again” — A Conversation with Chubby Checker

We’ve all done it.
At a middle school dance, high school prom,
college formal, wedding reception, anniversary
celebration, New Year’s Eve or perhaps on your
kitchen floor during a lazy Saturday morning.
It’s “The Twist.” An icon of rock-n-roll, legend-
ary singer Chubby Checker will be taking the stage
June 24 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona.
Born in Spring Gulley, South Carolina, but
raised in Philadelphia, Checker began his musical
career singing in a street-corner harmony group,
honing his skills and carving a niche for himself as
an entertainer. He would do impressions of popu-
lar singers at the time, which included Jerry Lee
Lewis, Elvis Presley and Fats Domino.
While singing to customers at a produce mar-
ket he worked at, others began to see his raw,
unique talent. They got him into a recording studio
and soon his world flipped upside down, starting
with an immortal performance on American Band-
stand with Dick Clark. During the show, Checker
sang and shook his body to “The Twist,” a melody
and motion that took the music industry by storm.
Nothing was ever the same after that program.
Checker offered up more sensations through the
likes of “The Hucklebuck,” “Pony Time,” “Let’s
Twist Again,” “The Fly” and “Limbo Rock,”
amongst others.
Now, more than a half-century later, the mu-
sic still endures, as fresh as the day his voice was
put to vinyl. In 2008, “The Twist” topped Billboard
magazine’s list of most popular singles to have
appeared in the Hot 100 since the chart debuted

tend to go back to the music they originally grew
up on.
CC: That’s so true. And when people come
to see us, they’re coming to see the number one
song on the planet. From 1958 to 2008, “The
Twist” was named the number one song. The next
time that event takes place will be 2058, so that
means the next song hasn’t been nominated yet,
so “The Twist” will reign for a hundred years.
GKW: What is “The Twist” to you?
CC: “The Twist” is the dance floor. That style of
dancing was born when that song was showcased
on American Bandstand. Nothing in the music in-
dustry was the same again. It’s not line dancing.
It’s not slow dancing. And as we speak, it was the
biggest event in the music industry because any-
body that has a song, has a beat, they’re always
coming through the Chubby Checker post office.
GKW: Who invented that style of dance?
CC: You know, I watched kids in the inner city
and added some things to it.

We are often warned about our Social Media ac-
counts are vulnerable to hacking and to be on alert
should it happen to us. That’s because when it does
usually there are some interesting post put up on
our behalf that we would NEVER think about post-
ing. Well last month a couple of country stars had
their Twitter accounts hacked! Both Brett Eldredge
and Kellie Pickler saw their accounts taken over and
some vulgar tweets sent to other stars on their be-
half. Including one to Taylor Swift from Kellie’s ac-
count saying “I hope you die @taylorswift13”. Yikes!
Dave’s Country Corner
Thankfully both singers were able to get control of
their accounts and made quick apologies to every-
one. It goes to show, anyone and everyone is vulner-
able so be aware of what is being posted on your
sites and make sure you are the only one with access
to them. Even big stars can get messed with!
Luke Bryan announced his 8th Annual Farm Tour
for the fall, it’s just a handful of dates for this special
tour. Say what you will about Luke, whether you are
a fan of his music or not he’s out on the road for his
fans doing what he loves. He also uses what he loves
to help others as much as he can as well. This small
tour will visit 8 farms South Carolina, Tennessee,
Kentucky, Indiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri
and Illinois in just a 10 day span! The cool thing is
a portion of the ticket proceeds from the 2016 Farm
Tour will be given to the Luke Bryan Farm Tour
Scholarship, which is a local college scholarship
which helps students from a farming family pay for
college. So even if you’re not a Luke fan, you have
to give him props for helping out kids who want to
further their education.
If you’re looking for new music, there are a few
albums coming out this month. Starting with July
8; Mark Chesnutt – Tradition Lives - it’s his first
album since 2010. Also available that day will be
Kenny Chesney – Some Town, Somewhere - July
15; David Nail – The Fighter - featuring his current
single “Night’s on Fire” and on July 29; Jake Owen –
American Love – featuring the lead single “American
Country Love Song”. You can find these albums at
your favorite place to buy music and of course online
as well.
As you hit the road this summer and if your trav-
els take you to Nashville, there is much to see and
do! Of course you’ll want to visit the Country Music
Hall of Fame & Museum. It’s amazing to be able to
learn more about the history of country music along
with the amazing artists and with the rotating exhib-
its they have it also gives you a look at some of the
newer acts too. Make sure you take the tour of the
Ryman Auditorium; it is the Mother Church of coun-
try music after all. Learning the history behind the
building is pretty cool too. There are the usual sus-
pects you’ll want to hit like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge,
the Station Inn, the Wildhorse Saloon and the like.
But make sure to look for the Sun Records Store, the
Hatch Print Shop and Charlie Daniels Store/Museum
too. They are well worth it and trust me you’ll spend
quite a bit of time at them too! I hope your summer
time is full of family and fun.
Fans of the TV show Nashville are rejoicing after
CMT stepped up and will be the new home for the
show this fall. Many fans were shocked after ABC
pulled the plug on the show, especially after the city
and state had done so much to help the show. They
received much need financial boosts to help with
the budget but man, being right there where all the
music happens and the amazing locations to shoot
at. Just this past season Thomas Rhett, Kelsea Bal-
lerini and many others were on the show. The entire
cast should return as they were under contract, new
writers were brought in to help with better storylines
too. This was maybe one of the biggest complaints
over the last couple of seasons, so let’s hope they get
beefed up. At least Nashville fans will be able to see
their favorite characters on the small screen come
fall on CMT each week. You’ll also be able to stream
the show on Hulu, in case you happen to miss it dur-
ing the week. But big Kudos for CMT & Hulu for step-
ping up and saving this much loved show, now you
need to watch and support it to keep it going.

The Chicago based band originated in 1962
when 14 year old DeYoung and brothers John and
Chuck Panozzo joined Dennis in the basement of
his childhood home to form one of America’s most
successful and enduring bands. STYX has sold
over 35 million albums worldwide and DeYoung
has written eight of their nine top ten singles. STYX
was the only band to ever record four consecutive
triple platinum albums.
For over five decades, DeYoung has been a sing-
er, songwriter, keyboardist, and record producer.
He wrote and sang several classics including Lady,
Come Sail away, Best of Times, Mr. Roboto, Show
Me the Way, Desert Moon, Don’t Let It End, and
the 1979 Peoples Choice Award winner, Babe. His
singing talents have made his voice one of the most
recognizable in the world. DeYoung has recorded
7 solo albums including Desert Moon, whose title
track achieved Top Ten status. DeYoung continues
to tour around the world with his band.
In 2014, Frontiers Music released worldwide

IN LOS ANGELES on a deluxe 2CD/DVD combina-
tion that encompasses the Greatest Hits of STYX.
This live concert was filmed at the El Rey Theatre
and was also released as a concert TV special on
AXS-TV. DeYoung said of this new live project, “I
am constantly amazed, and I mean this from the
bottom of my heart, that the (STYX) music has
touched so many people for such a long time, it
really is a testament to the songs. Because, strip it
all away, it is the songs that matter to people. You
get the song right and the people respond.”
2010 brought the formation of a new band dedi-
cated to the legacy of STYX which features August
Zadra, Jimmy Leahey, John Blasucci, Craig Carter,
Dave Anthony, and Suzanne DeYoung. To date this
group has performed over 300 concerts worldwide
focusing on the greatest hits of STYX. This year
DeYoung was named by DigitalDreamDoor.com as
the #22 greatest rock keyboardist and #38 greatest
rock vocalist of all time.
In 2008, Dennis was invited to join the Germany
tour of “Night of the Proms” with an array of art-
ists including Tears for Fears, 10CC, Kim Wilde, the
Bee Gee’s Robin Gibb, and the 60 piece Novecento
Orchestra. The tour performed in sold out arenas
throughout Germany.
DeYoung recorded his seventh solo album for
DEP Universal Canada in 2007. The title track, One
Hundred Years From Now, was released as a single
and reached #1 on the Pop, Rock, and AC charts in
Quebec. In 2008, this CD was released in the US
on Rounder Records and featured two additional
tracks.
In 2006, DeYoung performed live on Canadian
Idol. He also performed live on three episodes of
the Fox Network’s Celebrity Duets with celebrity
duet partner Hal Sparks and was selected as one of
three artists along with legends Smokey Robinson
and Gladys Knight for the finale. DeYoung was also
selected to perform live on VH1’s Big In 06 Awards
show along with The Killers, The Fray, Fergie, and
Weird Al.
