Objectives: At the end of the experiment the students should be able to:

1. Identify the different apparatus and its function in the laboratory.

2. Demonstrate knowledge on the basic laboratory procedure.

Instruction: Draw the different laboratory apparatus use a biochemistry

laboratory and indicate its use.

Digital Balance used for weighing

substances to the
milligram (0.001 g) level.
Use containers when
weighing chemicals and
always weigh objects at
room temperature.

Learning Discussion:

1. How do you transfer chemicals from one container to another?

-Simply place the funnel on top of the container with the tube inserted inside to transfer a liquid (or
powder) into it. Then, take the package or container containing the liquid or powder above the funnel,
slowly begin to pour the contents into the funnel

2. How do you measure liquids in a graduated cylinder?

-Using a graduated cylinder, determine the volume of liquid. Make sure to read the measurement at the
meniscus's bottom

3. How will you mix chemicals in a test tube?

-hold the tube gently but firmly between the thumb and forefinger of one hand and gently "thump" the
bottom of the tube with the middle and forefinger of the other hand.

4. What will you do in the event of chemical splashing in your eyes and skin?
-flush& wash your eyes or skin with clean water for about 15-20minutes, Repeat the previous steps until
the object is eliminated.

5. What will you do when a chemical spill in the laboratory occur?

-The people in the area should be alerted and all doors should be closed. If someone has been sprayed
with chemicals, cleanse the area for at least 15 minutes with water. Only a knowledgeable and
experienced person should clean up a chemical spill.
