Chemistry

Ciano, Allan
• How can you describe the arrangement of the particles of matter in each phase?
Solid are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern, it retains a fixed volume and shape.
Gas is well separated with no regular arrangement, assumes the shape and volume of its container
particles can move past one another.
Liquid is close together with no regular arrangement, assumes the shape of the part of the
container that it occupies particle can move and slide past one another.
• Do the particles stationary or continuously moving?
Particles move by vibrating, but do not change positions. The states that all of the particles that
make up matter are constantly in motion.
• Which particle is the most compressed?
The most compressed particles are the gas particles. Gases are compressible because most of the
volume of a gas is composed of the large amounts of empty space between the gas particles.

• How can you describe the number of particles in a small drop of food coloring?

The particles of a dye in a food coloring are much more concentrated. When placed in water they
will diffuse through the water where there are no dye particles, but the dye will only change the
waters color hence it just changes its physical properties.

• Are there spaces in between the particles of matter?

There is empty space between particles and it is called inter molecular space, the spaces between
solids and liquids are quite close to each other, while those in gases are very long way apart.
• How can the temperature and pressure affect the motion of the particles of matter?
As the temperature of a solid, liquid or gas increases, the particles move more rapidly and the
temperature falls, the particles slow down. When the pressure exerted on a substance increases, it
can cause the substance to condense. Decreasing pressure can cause it to vaporize.
