Proper Use of a Torque Wrench
1. A torque wrench is a precision instrument that will apply a specific amount of force to a fastener.
2. Do not use a torque wrench that does not have a valid calibration marking.
3. Always store the torque wrench in its case to protect it from damage.
4. Always store the torque wrench at its lowest torque setting to avoid permanently stretching the
spring.
5. Avoid dropping or sliding the torque wrench as this will cause it to lose its calibration.
6. Never use a torque wrench as a ratchet. It should be used for final bolt tightening only.
7. Never use a torque wrench to loosen a bolt as this will cause it to lose its calibration.
8. Always apply torque to your fasteners in a slow methodical manner and avoid jerking movements.
9. Always increase the toque of the fastener in stages appropriate for the application, using the proper
bolt tightening pattern.
10. Always pull the torque wrench toward yourself.
11. Torque wrenches are length specific. Always grasp it in the center of the hand grip. If 2 hands are
required, place one on top of the other.
