Synonymy is a translating a source language or expression with a target language expression that

is nearly. Synonymy used when target language are equivalent to source language in a context, a
synonym is only appropriate when literal translation is not possible to use
Example:
Source language: “Dia adalah teman kelasku yang paling aku benci”
Literal translation: “He is a friend in my class that I hate the most”
The word “teman” in bahasa Indonesia defined as someone who is related to someone else, but
has no family relationship
However in English “friend” defined as a person who is not related, whom someone knows and
likes well
In these sentence “I hate the most” was contradicted with the definition of the word “friend” in
English as someone knows and likes well. Here, we can change the word “friend” with its
synonym “mate” as “classmate” because it refers to member of the same class.
Synonym translation: “He is a classmate that I hate the most”
