According to me it can be both BOON and small scale BANE.

Explaination -The internal combustion engine has become an integral
part of the lives of every person on earth.
They are the devices which are mainly use to Generate electricity
mainly in remote control areas and to travel all around the world in an
matter of hours.
IC engine also plays an important role in Railway, marine, power plant,
industries etc.
All these engines work on burning a fuels and generate a energy to
produce a useful work. It's these heat engine that have really change
the world. We can't imagine a life in a current situation without a
transportation system or other systems which directly uses the IC
engines. this is the Boon of an IC engines.
Now, the Bane is in small scale of IC engine, but it is bad for pollution.
Almost at all the places where we use IC engine, we uses the filter to
reduce the level of pollution made by burning of fuels.
Overall It causes the environmental damage, It is only now we are
beginning to realise the full extent of this damage.
But when we talk about our present and future, then I think IC engine is
Bane For us.
