CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Accountants typically have a wide skill set they apply to a company’s financial

information. These include analytical skill, which are those specific skills that help

accountants use logic to solve problems. Problem solving is just one issue an accountant must

overcome in this industry. Most accountants have some level of analytical skill that help them

perform various duties. (Thomason, 2017). “Analytical skill is the ability to visualize,

articulate, and solve both complex and uncomplicated problems and concepts and make

decisions that are sensible and based on available information.” You are an accountant, right?

Well, that means that you have some keen analytical skills that can be used on things other than

just accounting. In my case, I use my analytical skills to gauge how successful my website is

each week, and then determine whether I need to make any changes to my site to increase the

desired results. (Iconis, 2019).

An accountant must be able to analyze data and find problems, but hiring firms also

desire candidates who can fix the problems they find. Accountants with strong problem-solving

skills are able to provide decision-making support, which makes them an asset to the company.

When it comes to a career as an accountant, focus on obtaining the right skills and experience to

create a well-rounded resume. By highlighting these eight technical and analytical skills, you can

become the candidate every firm desires. (Deveney, 2017).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to identify the effectiveness of analytical skills in accounting of selected

students at St. Ignatius Cabuyao. Specifically it sought answers to the following questions:

1. What are the effects of analytical skills in accounting?

2. Why are analytical skills important in accounting?

3. How are the following group of people can be able to help ABM students in improving their

analytical skills?:

A. The Parents

B. The Teachers

C. The Peers

Having an analytical skill can make the ABM students answer their accounting problems

easily. Doing balancing sheets can be handled easily and can be finished with less stress, less

procrastination, and less headaches. It can also result to higher grades that can make not just the

students but also the teachers and the parents proud of them. Solving accounting problems will

never be a hindrance again to prove that the students can pass the ABM strand no matter how

hard it is because of their improved analytical skills.

The main problem of the ABM students in St. Ignatius Cabuyao is that, they lack in

analytical skills. Most of the students can’t follow the lectures that their teachers discuss

specifically in the major subjects of ABM strand. A lot of them always receive failing grades due

to the low activity grades when they are assigned to do a balance sheet. Balancing and problem

solving are indeed the nightmares of ABM students, but of course they should do something to

overcome their issues in the strand they’ve chosen. Help and support from the parents, teachers

and peers can motivate them to improve their analytical skills and by that they will be able to

practice on their accounting subjects.

The researchers aim to help the ABM students to learn asking for help to their parents,

teachers and peers so that they can improve their analytical skills and answer the accounting

problems that they can’t answer before. Seeking help especially to the teacher is a great

opportunity to prevent the students neglecting their studies just because it’s hard for them to

handle.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Analytical skill is important to anyone especially students of St. Ignatius Cabuyao

campus because, some of the students in St. Ignatius Cabuyao Campus which are currently

taking ABM strand with sufficient analytical skill regarding their major subject or in anything

else. Having sufficient analytical skills produces a good deal of knowledge of the things we want

to learn and prove. Analytical skill is important for anything because it makes it easier and better

to understand the things we want to accomplish just like accounting because you will have

difficulty if your analytical skill is not good enough. So we just have to develop it further to

facilitate and answer those we want to prove.

Analytical skill can help you to learn more about the things you want to know, It enables

you to discover how you can make things easier for you, It facilitates decision making and

improves the confidence to give your opinion on the things you want prove that you learned and

that we can organize and integrate it with our analytical skills. Once we understand it and put it

together, it will be easier for us to give and to convey what we want to prove and to know.

Having sufficient analytical skills in our activities and in our studies produces a good and better

future that can lead us to the future and develop our opinion or we want to know more about

things we should which is learned and studied. We can better appreciate and prove the things we

want to prove by dealing with people we know ourselves and what we want to prove right. it will

give us enough knowledge and good evidence.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies both form local and foreign

sources. This also includes the synthesis of the related literature and related studies, also the

research gap of unpublished studies.

LOCAL AND FOREIGN LITERATURE

Accounting job skills consist of far more than just number-crunching: accountants must

be able to execute in-depth financial analysis, and be able to approach each situation with a

critical mind, working from a strong, integrated foundation of accounting knowledge to

determine the appropriate course of action and the techniques to be used. In addition to being

able to use financial data effectively, one of the most important skills for accounting

professionals is the ability to interpret that financial data, and analyze the interplay between that

information, the overall organization, and various individual departments within it. (Krakoff,

2019).

Another is, Accounting professionals can work in auditing, tax and even managerial

accountant positions. Additionally, accountants also work in accounts payable and accounts

receivable, keeping track of a company's payments and incoming cash receipts, respectively.

Because accountants work with a variety of financial reports and figures, they must have many

skills, including excellent communication, analytical, math, detail-orientation and computer

skills. Accountants must possess analytical skills. They must constantly work with financial

analysts and managers in finding ways to reduce expenses, or finding ways to efficiently allocate

more money for specific functions in a given year. Accountants must also analyze each

department's budget, finding ways to cut less necessary expenses.(Suttle, 2019) .

In local, It presents the success story of USL in its Outcomes-Based Accountancy

Education from data gathered using the descriptive/case analysis research design primarily using

secondary data analysis technique to analyze existing publications, memorandum orders, and

studies relative to the study. (Pattaguan,2016). Lastly, This paper show that all problem solving,

evaluating and interpreting financial data/systems, business cases, and design of theoretical

questions discouraging memorization are perceived by students to be highly significant to the

general development of analytical skills. (De Leon, 2005).

SYNTHESIS

According to Related Studies and Related Literature that Analytical skills is the most

important factor in studying or the most important skill when it comes in accounting. Analytical

skills is very relevant to Accounting students. Analytical skill is very important specially in

accounting students because this skill is responsible in problem-solving also , it helps the

students to handle problems properly and professionally. To summarize the articles in related

literature and related studies they explained that having an Analytical skills is also a blessing

especially for accountants. Accountants also work in accounts payable and accounts receivable,

keeping track of a company's payments and incoming cash receipts, respectively. (Suttle, 2019) .

Analytical skills are skills such as computing, visualization, articulation, and solving both

practice and repetition. What most people don’t realize is that analytical skills are not ones that

can be taught in a classroom, they are taught by actually working the problems in real life.

Analytical thinking skills had been categorized. However, these major cognitive activities are

hard to be categorized due to their similarity and interrelation. In the Philippines, accounting

mainly prepares the graduates to hurdle the certified public accountant (CPA) board

examinations and a career in public accounting. Accountants typically have a wide skill set they

apply to a company’s financial information. Most accountants have some level of analytical

skills that help them perform various duties. Accounting is often seen as an important part of a

business because it provides companies with the best information regarding the inner workings

of their operations.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the methodology of the study. This includes the research approach

and design, the setting, the population, the sampling criteria, the data collection instrument, the

data gathering, and the data analysis. These procedures will help the researchers to formulate

their findings.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Case study describes a person, a thing, or any creature for the purpose of explaining the

reasons behind the nature of its existence. It can give the specific answer for the problems. The

results are based on the interpretation on the effectiveness of analytical skills in accounting as

perceived by the selected grade 11 Accountancy, Business and Management students of St.

Ignatius Cabuyao Campus.

This is the best that we chose for our study because it can help us to make our study more

clear and to prove it more clearly, by using and choosing this study the questions and problems

will be defined, it will be answered properly and specifically, it can help ourselves to make our

LOCALE

The populations of the study are the students of St. Ignatius of St. Ignatius Cabuyao

Campus. Respondents that are Grade 11 and currently taking ABM strand will be the target

population. Guide questions will be used to interview the selected students that will serve as the

respondents of this study. The interview that will be conducted has a certain time to have a well

organized conversation between the interviewer and the respondent.

This is the best location that we chose because here in St. Ignatius Cabuyao Campus

some of students here are currently taking the academic strand ABM, they can easily cooperate,

give and answer things that we wanted to ask for them because they have knowledge and

experience about the strand of ABM. St. Ignatius Cabuyao Campus is the nearest place to make

this study so that we don’t need to go somewhere just to search for ABM students. We can easily

get significant information and knowledge that will contribute to our study.

PARTICIPANTS

The participants will be from Grade 11 ABM of St. Ignatius Cabuyao Campus that can

give more information about this study. Respondents that can response to a communication made

by another and give us details about the study.

The criterion that was made helps us, the researchers to determine the appropriate

respondents that can provide information about this research study. Criteria also help researchers

to make the study easier for them. We, researchers can select the suitable respondents for this

study and the criteria will be our guide.

INSTRUMENTS

Interview is an applicable technique that provides a better understanding and explanation

about the collected information. Guide questions enhance the conversation of the interviewer and

respondent because it can lessen inaccuracy that is based on assumptions.

Interview consists of an interviewer, who will organize the conversation and asks question, and

an interviewee or the respondent who will respond to the questions of the interviewer. Guide

questions include the list of the topics and questions that an interviewer desires to ask during the

process of an interview. The questions are understandable so that in-depth information will be

collected. It contains open-ended question that can help the respondents to share their opinion,

feelings, thoughts and experience.

SAMPLING METHOD

The study used purposive sampling in selecting respondents. The respondents will

be identified if they were found to be experiencing hindrances in answering accounting problems

based on the interview that will be conducted.

Sampling is not much affected by the pandemic because we can do it through video call

or chat likewise, the respondents will be identified based on their familiarity with the effects of

analytical skills in accounting. Only those who are willing and available will be involved in the

study.

DATA ANALYSIS

After getting the approval of the researcher adviser, permission will be used to conduct

interview with the respondents. Responses to the questionnaire by ABM students were

statistically analyzed with the data requirements of the study. Informed consent forms as well as

assent forms will also be secured to be able to get the participation of the respondents.

The interview questions will be given in advance to allow the subjects and study

participants prepare their answers. They will be personally and through chat conversation

interviewed by the researchers in the campus during their convenient time. The responses will be

transcribed as soon as possible and will be coded and categorized for interpretation.
