    The taiga biome, also known as the boreal forest or snow forest, occupies about 17% of the Earth's land. It receives little precipitation of 25-75 cm per year. Winters are extremely cold but not severe. Taiga biomes consist of hills, valleys, lowlands, mountains, and plains surrounded by bodies of water. During summer, the taiga is surrounded by grassy plants. The main source of energy in the taiga food web are spruce and other conifer trees. Common animals include foxes, bears, deer, rabbits, squirrels, lynx, wolves and many bird species.
