(CONTROL and REGULATORY)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Understand the “control” and “regulatory” functions of communication.
2. Identify the speaker’s purpose for communicating.
3. Examine sample of the oral communication skills.

INTRODUCTION about the LESSON

Function refers to the particular purpose for which a thing is used, something exists, or a person is
fitted to meet his/her or somebody else’s needs or desires.
Whenever we communicate, we always have a definite purpose, which is usually intentional,
perceptible or recognizable, and functional or designed to achieve something positive. In some instances,
however, our good intention produces a concomitant or accompanying unintentional, dysfunctional result. To
avoid having this unintended negative effect, we need to use clear, correct language and be sensitive to cultural
differences.
Communication is designed to serve basic functions: (a) to control and regulate, (b) to effect social
interaction and to provide emotional expression, (c) to motivate and to provide information.
