Laboratory Exercise # 1 ( OSMOSIS)

Purpose of the laboratory exercise (based on the content of the video):

To investigate osmosis in living cells and understand more about how osmosis
really works in real life, using such materials to observe and see its results.

Briefly describe the procedure used in the activity. (Brief in this context means short but it
comprehendly covers the needed information)

First, place the peeled potato in the tile and flatten it with a knife at both ends and
create a cavity all the way to the bottom. The cavity should be deep enough to keep only a thin layer
of tissue at the potato's base, after that , half-fill the petri dish with distilled water, then place the
potato in a petri dish filled with distilled water. Fill half of the potato cavity with the 20 percent sugar
solution and by using pins, mark the level of sugar solution in the cavity. Lastly, use another pin to
mark the rise in the level of sugar solution in the cavity.

Results of the activity/experiment as described in the video

The result of the activity/experiment was presented on how osmosis works. It was
shown that because of the difference in the concentration of solvent molecules in the two regions,
where sugar solution has a high osmotic concentration and the water with lower concentration, the
level of sugar solution in the potato cavity rises after a while because the water entered into the sugar
solution through the semipermeable membrane of the cells of the potato.

Reaction to the video (You may state here whether you like or dislike the video based on the
manner how it was presented. Provide reasons for your views or opinion) (1 paragraph will
do for this part)

Watching the video as a group, we find the video to be very convenient and
easy to follow/ to cope with and understand. It also helps us to gain more knowledge about
Osmosis. It is more likely to say that we really liked the video.

Important learnings acquired from the video (1 paragraph will do for this part)

The important learning we acquired from the video is learning how osmosis
works, by that we've learned the fluid from the higher concentration transfers to a region of lower
concentration and being seperated by the semi permeable membrane, So basically when osmosis
1
occur the higher concentration region transfers to the lower concentration region through a
semipermeable membrane. In the experiment video the potato represents the osmometer and the semi
permeable membrane, as we observe the solution with 20% Percent sugar had risen as time passed by
because of the pure water entering the low concentration region through the semipermeable
membrane or the potato and to add, we also observed and understand the process of osmosis and how
it applies to our environment like how plants absorb water from the soil using osmosis.
