Civil Rights Opposing Viewpoints

Day 1:

● Find and save 4 articles on a civil rights issue. Each article should be a different
viewpoint on the SAME topic.
● Copy and paste the headline and hyperlink of each article.
● Write a thorough summary for each article.

Day 2:

● Use the AP Argument Writing Scoring Rubric to evaluate each article. Give it a number
score, but more importantly, justify why you scored it that way. The more detailed and
specific you are, the better.
● Finally, answer the question at the end of the assignment.

Headline & Link: Asian American athletes speak out against rising hate: ‘We are tired
of being invisible.’

Article Summary: Asian-American athletes are facing discrimination on and off the
field, and how it has been inherit in American culture for a long time.
Like mocking a Japanese baseball player with an accent, racial slurs,
anti-asian comments, and even shootings and violence against
asians amid the pandemic.

Thesis (1) There was a clear claim that the article was making.

Evidence & (4) The article gives several example of discriminatory occurrences
Commentary and how they are prejudiced against asian-american athletes.

Sophistication (1) The article also talked about how the black lives matter
movement has given asian- americans a voice, and what some asian-
americans in athletics are doing for the community.

Headline & Link: Why Silicon Valley’s Many Asian Americans Still Feel Like a Minority

Article Summary: How asian-american opportunities in tech vary greatly, and how
some asian-american billionaires feel as discriminated against as
those making minimum wage. With sexualized comments,
assumptions, or reviews based more on race than actual
performance.

Thesis (1) The thesis was immediately stated and is defensible.

Evidence & (4) The article gave several examples of wealthy asian-americans in
different companies who attest to driscrimination, and how they are
Commentary perceived affected their growth and others. They went on to explain
how that still affects them today

Sophistication (1) The article talks about how even with a huge wealth ga between
many asians still doesn not affect the discrimination they face, and
how they are the few to break through the “bamboo” ceiling.

Headline & Link: How America tells me and other Asian American men we’re not
attractive
The Seattle Times

Article Summary: Stereotypes and discrimination against Asian-American men’s looks


affects their dating lives and self-esteem. Many are either
fetishizing, or only going after Asian-American men who look like
Kpop idols, or like the handsome asians in movies. They don’t desire
normal asian guys who are darker and don’t look like the popular
image of asian guys.

Thesis (1 ) The article sets up a defensible claim/ argument.

Evidence & (4) The article references a professor's study on the topic, and
Commentary offers personal experiences of disparaging comments that support
the argument.

Sophistication (1) The article talks about the exceptions and how the asians in
movies haven't really affected the other asian men who are dating. It
also talks about the author personally seeking white girls to validate
that he was attractive.

Headline & Link: ‘Protect Chinatown’s family’: Program aims to mitigate fear, combat
isolation caused by Asian hate
The Boston Globe

Article Summary: Many of the elderly are feeling lonely and unsafe amid
discrimination. A program desires to help ease fears and protect the
elderly. They walk with them to places and just hang out with them
so they feel safe.

Thesis (1 ) The article gives an argument or topic that they will support.

Evidence & (3) The article gives examples of what the program will do, but
Commentary doesn’t go much into depth about it. It gives examples of hate crimes
against the elderly.
Sophistication (0) The article doesn’t go very in depth into their program, and talks
more about general asian-hate crime than what the program does in
detail.

Finally, according to the rubric (not your own personal views), which article
presented the most effective argument? Explain.
The first article set the most effective argument because it gave a clear
argument, what is being done about it, and clear and sporting
evidence/examples that support the claim.
