GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT

Complete the sentences with the correct forms of can/ can’t and have to/ don’t have to. Sometimes there is
more than one possible answer.

Cause and effect key words


To join sentences together, we use key words such as: “so”
“because”, if, then, etc.

Examples:

CAUSE: A hurricane hit the city CAUSE: They didn´t score


EFFECT: all schools were closed EFFECT: They lost the game

“A hurricane hit the city so all schools were closed” They didn´t score, so they lost the game
“All schools were closed because a hurricane hit the city” They lost the game because they didn´t score

Conditional 1
First conditional sentences describe real possibilities. Use the present tense in the if clause (the condition).
Use will in the main clause.

If you touch the ball in a soccer game, you will be penalized.


If he plays tennis today, he will be very tired tomorrow.
If I don’t train for the swimming competition, I won’t win.
If she doesn’t study for the exam, she won’t pass the course.

Indirect objects
 Some verbs require indirect objects (buy/ give/ send)
 An indirect object is usually a person: My mom, my dad, my friend, my brother, etc.
For example: I’m going to buy my mother something special.
Alicia will not give Dave anything
Let’s send Mom and Dad some flowers
