LOVE NEVER

SURRENDERS
THE GREATEST IS LOVE…

PJ
TRUE LOVE NEVER SURRENDERS

Four things love never fails…

Paul has described love in positive terms – what love is. He has
described love in negative terms – what love is not. He has described
love with a contrasting statement. And now finally he tells us four
things that love always does. Look at verse 7: “Love always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
(1 Corinthians 13:7) Let’s look at each of these briefly.

    A. Love Never Fails to PROTECT.

First, love always protects. The word Paul uses here is related to
the Greek word for “roof.” It means “to protect by covering over,” just
as a roof provides a protective covering from the elements. Protection
is a natural byproduct of love.

👍 A pastor protects the church he loves. How? By giving the whole

counsel of God. That is, teaching the Word of God rightfully dividing
the Word of truth. By being a food examples in ways people can
follow. By loving God and showing them to the congregation.

👍 The good shepherd protects the sheep. By leading them to the good
pasture. Leading them home and guarding them everywhere they go.

👍 A parent naturally protects his or her children. HOW? By disiciplining

them with love. Some children complain that their parents are over-
protective. Paul calls it love.

👍 A Godly lover protects his/her lover by not doing what can destroy
his/her life, future, dreams and aspirations in life. HOW? By preserving
dignity in their relationship. Keep away from ungodly and destructive
activities such as: Pre-marital sex. Living a righteous life (right
standing before God). If either of the two cannot provide for this, then
that relationship will go nowhere. USE YOUR KUKUTI NAMAN MGA
BABAE. DI PORKET GWAPO NA AT MAYAMAN PA, EH PASOK NA AGAD
SA STANDARD MO SIYA! If he or she cannot protect your
SPIRITUALITY, YOUR DREAMS, YOUR VIRGINITY and your DIGNITY…
You will have a HARD time with that person someday. BELIEVE ME
WHEN I SAY THIS. I HAVE SEEN MANY SO CALLED SWEET LOVERS
ENDED UP AS BITTER ENEMIES.

ROOF - If it's in good shape, your roof serves as a barrier against

snow, hail, rain, ice, branches, and debris. If your roof is in poor
shape, your home can get leaks, develop mold and mildew, and
experience other problems. Even a small leak in the roof line can
cause large-scale water problems across major home systems.

PROTECT – keep safe from harm and danger. Preserve.

God’s type of love protects. That is, it watches out for others. It
withstands difficulty. And, if there is a shortcoming or fault in the loved
one, love has the ability to cover it (see Proverbs 10:12). Love is not
based on selfish desire or even mutual benefit; rather, it seeks the
benefit of the other person. Love aims to give rather than receive.

In the Old Testament, God’s protection of Israel was a sign of His love.
“Though we are slaves, our God has not deserted us in our
bondage. . . . He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our
God and repair its ruins, and he has given us a wall of protection”
(Ezra 9:9).

The Psalms also highlight the connection between God’s love and His
protection.

❤️Psalm 68:5 declares God to be a “father to the fatherless, a

defender of widows.”

❤️Psalm 91:14 also promises God’s protection of those who love and
trust Him.

ILLUSTRATION: We find a wonderful example of love’s protective

nature in the story of Christ’s birth. When Joseph learned of Mary’s
pregnancy, he was faced with a choice: “expose her to public disgrace”

2
or “divorce her quietly” (Matthew 1:19). Joseph, being a righteous
man, was planning to keep the matter quiet. In other words, he was
covering over what he saw as a fault in Mary, and he protected her
from public shame. This is love.

One of the marks of love is that it always seeks to protect the

loved one. This doesn’t mean that we excuse wrongdoing or
seek to evade the natural consequences of sin; it means that
we strengthen what is weak, shield what is vulnerable, and
forgive what is provoking.

❤️Proverbs 18:10 “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the

righteous run to it and are safe.”

3 WAYS GOD PROTECTS US…

God is a loving Father who protects us from

harm, but not necessarily from important
lessons.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear
no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort
me. – Psalm 23:4

It’s no doubt that King David encountered many life or death situations in
his time here on earth. He faced giants, fought wars, and had to run from
an obsessed king who literally hunted him with the intention to kill him. But
David knew that God would protect him because He knew that God would
keep His promises and plans for Him in tact. David would become king of
Israel and would be part of the bloodline of Jesus. Nothing, not even an
obsessed king, could take that away.

But that doesn’t mean David had it easy. He spent years of his life in
hiding. He faced battles that seemed impossible to win.And sometimes,
David made mistakes that he had to own up to… like his sin with
Bathsheba. He would ultimately lose his son because of that mistake.

3
As parents we want to protect our kids from harm. But
that doesn’t
mean we step in every time they face a battle.Sometimes
they NEED to face that battle in order to grow. And while
they are in the midst of that trial, we hold their hand and
support them. In the same way, God promises to always
be with us during times of struggle and difficultly.

THREE THINGS NEEDED WHEN YOU MAKE

A MISTAKE: ADMIT IT, LEARN FROM IT, AND
DON’T REPEAT IT.

2. God protects us by mending our brokenness

so that we can work from a place of rest.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. – Psalm
147:3

KINSA DIRI ANGA NASAKITAN NA PERO NAGPASALAMAT KA? KAY

NGANO? BECAUSE YOU REALIZED THAT YOU NEEDED THAT PAIN
SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THAT YOU NEED GOD MOST. THAT
YOU HAVE SOME OTHER THINGS THAT ARE MORE IMPORTANT!
THAT YOU WOKE UP FROM A NIGHTMARE! AND YOU REALIZED
YOU WERE WRONG ALL THE TIME…

As a parent, I can’t protect my kids from every broken heart

or disappointment. We live in a world where things happen
and people make choices outside of our control. But I can
love and support them. I can help them through difficult
times and ease their hearts and minds.

Truthfully though, I can’t do what God does. I can’t heal my

kids, give them peace, or allow them to feel joy in the midst

4
of their sorrow. But God can! He takes delight in healing our
hearts and making us whole.

CRY. FORGIVE. LEARN. MOVE ON. LET THE

TEARS WATER THE FUTURE OF YOUR
HAPPINESS. FOR THINGS THAT HURT,
TEACH!

God’s love protects us from the enemy.

We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He
who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does
not touch him. We know that we are of God, and that the
whole world lies in the power of the evil one. – 1 John
5:18-19
Jesus’ death and resurrection sealed the deal. His Kingdom
had arrived and those in His Kingdom were no longer slaves
to sin and fear. The evil one cannot touch a child of God. His
weapons are useless against us.

Now this doesn’t mean he won’t try. Once the ruler of this

world, he isn’t too keen on the idea of losing his “kingdom”
on earth. But the Bible assures us that the gates of hell will
not prevail against the Kingdom of God. It’s a done deal. And
as citizens of God’s Kingdom, we are protected from
anything the enemy wants to throw our way.

5
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide
in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My
refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust!” –
Psalm 91:1-2

 B. Love never Fails to TRUST.

Secondly, love always trusts. The word here means to trust or
believe in, to commit yourself to someone or something. Now love
is not stupid or naïve. I don’t think I saw those words
anywhere on Paul’s list. It does not believe an obvious lie or blindly put
its trust in untrustworthy people. But love chooses to believe the
best about people until proven otherwise. And love certainly
trusts God who is always completely trustworthy.

❤️Psalm 37:5-6 “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and
he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like
the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.”

What does blind love mean?

—used to say that people do not see the faults of the people that
they love.

6
Why do we say love is blind?
A girl might say "love is blind" meaning that she's got the “hots” for
the wrong guy…(REMEMBER SAMSON?) Or, weuse it in a not-so-
nice way to refer to loving someone who is, shall we say, less than
attractive. Love is blind because we don't care how a person
looks. We care about their inner beauty.

Does love really make you blind?

Loving doesn't make you blind. It's just that sometimes we end up
letting ourselves get blinded by it. In other words, we put the
bandages on ourselves. We're the ones who ignore what the
relationship is really like for them, and for us.

God’s Love is not Blind

They say that “love is blind,” that is, it does not see the faults of the
beloved. God’s love is different however, His love is not blind love,
because He not only sees our faults, but He knows the very inner
most depths of our heart. His
love is not blind love,
but unconditional love. He is not blind to our faults, but
accepting. He does not overlook them, but covers them with His own blood so as
to pay the price which His divine justice demands. HIS LOVE IS NOT BLIND TO
OUR FAULTS AND IMPERFECTIONS, IN FACT, HE MADE THE BEST PLAN
FOR US TO CORRECT OUR SIN

STAINED LIVES BY DYING ON THE CROSS TO PAY THE RANSOM FOR IT.

TRUST

Greek Word: Pisteuo- To think to be true, to be persuaded of, to

credit, place confidence in of the thing believed, to credit, have
confidence

7
In a moral or religious reference: to trust in Jesus or God as able to
aid either in obtaining or in doing something: saving faith

Trust: You cannot have a healthy relationship without it. And yet,
virtually all of us can bring to mind a scenario where our trust has
been broken.

But how do we develop trust in the first place? Can trust that’s been
broken be rebuilt?

HOW TO BUILD TRUST?

A. Be true to your words

B. Comminicate effectively
C. Build it slowly but consistently
D. Be honest
E. Do what is right
F. Admit mistakes

    C. Love never Fails to HOPE.

Thirdly, love always hopes. Love is unabashedly optimistic. Love does
not dwell on the problems of the past, but looks forward to the future
with confidence and grace.

THERE IS WHAT WE CALL THE THREE SISTERS… HOPE, FAITH

AND LOVE.
Faith, hope, and love are not just durable and precious virtues or
character. They are eternal, transcendent, powerful driving forces in
human life. Moreover, for believers, they are inextricably linked to
Christ as their source and personified image.

It is Christ Who has initiated and perfected our faith in God. Christ is
and remains our Hope that one day everything will come in perfect

8
order and life will devour death. He is our Hope when all other hopes
are have faded away.

IF LOVE IS THE GREATEST, AND FAITH IS – an Attitude of the

Heart… Faith is always the starting point. The Bible says that without
faith no one can come to God be able to please Him. HOPE IS THE
ANCHOR OF THE SOUL. Here’s how the voice of hope sounds: “I
know things will work out, I just do not know how and when.

It is not accidental that hope is likened in the Bible to a firm and

secure anchor for the soul that penetrates behind the curtain, into the
invisible and eternal. (Hebrews 6:19).

“Hope is called the anchor of the soul (Hebrews 6:19) because it gives
stability to the Christian life. But hope is not simply a ‘wish’ (I wish
that such-and-such would take place); rather, it is that which latches
on to the certainty of the promises of the future that God has made.”
-RC Sproul

    D. Love never Fails to PERSEVERE.

And finally, love always perseveres. Love never stops loving. It
continues in the face of rejection and opposition. It bears up under
Love perseveres because it is
insult and injury.
unconditional. It chooses to love people in spite of themselves.
Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
And Paul says that without this kind of love, we are nothing.

CONCLUSION: So, how did your list come out? I hope you kept a
balance of strengths and weaknesses on your list. Take a moment now

9
and circle the three areas on your strengths list where you feel you are
the strongest. Next, circle the three areas on your weaknesses list
where you feel you need the most growth.

What do you do with your list now? Praise God for your strengths, and
ask him to help you with your weaknesses. It’s that easy. The qualities
Paul has described here are really the fruit of the Holy Spirit in your
life. It is only as you yield to God and his Spirit asking him to change
you that he will make you into a more loving person.

Someone has suggested taking your own name and plugging it into
verses 4-7 wherever you see the word love to see how you measure
up. Try it! If you’re like me, you won’t get very far before you get
discouraged and say, “Yeah, right! If only that were me!”

I think a better suggestion is to take Jesus’ name and

plug it in wherever you see the word love. “Jesus is
patient, Jesus is kind. He does not envy, he does not
boast, he is not proud. He is not rude, he is not self-
seeking, he is not easily angered, he keeps no record
of wrongs. Jesus does not delight in evil but rejoices
with the truth. He always protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always perseveres.”

Jesus is the only one who truly fulfills this beautiful picture of love. He
is the prism that breaks love down into its constituent parts so that we
can see it more clearly. He is the perfect rainbow of love. Rather than
get discouraged over your own shortcomings, cast yourself upon Christ
who is perfect love. Meditate on the beauty of his character. And let
God do his work in your life, transforming you ever more into the
likeness of Christ by the power of his Spirit. That is the secret to
growing in love.
