Q-1

a) Explain what are Newtonian fluids and non-Newtonian fluids.

b) Explain shear thinning, shear thickening and Bingham plastic by drawing a graph in relation with
the equation given below
τ

c) A fluid of viscosity 2.5 ⁄ is contained between a vertical gap with a width of 2.4 cm and
infinite extend. Through the middle of the gap, a metallic plate of 1.4 m x 1.4 m x 0.002 m is to be
lifted up with a constant velocity of 0.25 ⁄ . If the plate is lifted in the middle of the gap; find
the force required to lift it.
Given: Weight of the plate , ⁄ ; Specific gravity of fluid=0.9

Q-2

A plane surface of area is totally immersed in a liquid of density as shown in Figure Q2-1. The
surface is inclined at an angle θ to the horizontal and its centroid is at a vertical depth below the free
surface.

Fig Q-2.1

(a). Show that the distance to the center of pressure from the free surface is given by the expression,

Where, is the second moment of inertia about the axis

(b). Derive an expression to obtain the horizontal & vertical components of the total force acting on a
curved surface AB, submerged in a static fluid as shown in fig Q-2.2

Fig Q-2.2

(c). Referring to the fig Q-2.2; solve for the horizontal and vertical components of the total force
acting on the curve AB (Gate); which is in the form of a quadrant of a circle of radius 4m.

Consider the width of the gate to be 1m and OC= 3m.

Q-3

a) Derive an expression for the pressure (P) generated by a fluid body in rotational motion with
uniform angular velocity (ω). Refer fig.Q-3.1.

Fig-Q3.1

b) A U shaped pipe with dimensions given in the fig. Q-3.2 has a diameter d. At one of its ends a
cork blocks water from moving outward, while the other end is free. The density of fluid ρ and the
atmospheric pressure Pa are given.

Find the angular velocity ω about axis a-a that is required to release the cork, given that the
required force for removal is F.

Fig. Q-3.2

c) An open tank 5m long and 2m wide is filled with water to a depth of 1.5m as shown in Fig Q-3.3.
Find the slope of the water surface when the tank moves with an acceleration of 3ms-2 in the
c.1. Upward direction along the 300 inclined plane
c.2. Downward direction along the 300 inclined plane

Q-4

a) Derive the Euler’s equation which gives a relation for the variation of pressure(P), elevation(Z)
and velocity(V) along a streamline in a frictionless flow by referring fig Q-4.1.

Fig Q-4.1.

b) By using the above derived Euler’s equation; derive the Bernoulli’s equation in terms of pressure
between two points on the streamline as given below. Mention the assumptions made during the
derivation.

c) Express the Bernoulli’s equation for real fluids.

d) A pipeline carrying oil of specific gravity 0.83, changes in diameter from 150 mm diameter at
position A to 400 mm diameter at position B which is 5 meters above A. If the pressure at A and
B are 9.58 and 4.886 respectively and the discharge is 150 l/s, determine the loss
of head.
