Defining relative clause


It explains who, what or where we are talking about.

Who and that for people Marie Curie is the woman  who discovered radium.

Which or that for things This is the house  that Jack built 

Where for places Stratford-upon-Avon is  the town  where  Shakespeare was born.

Whose for possessions This is George  whose  brother went to school with me.

Non-defining relative clause


It gives extra information about a noun. The main clause makes sense with or without the relative
clause. We use a comma before and after the clause who or which with that.

Lord Thompson,  who is 76, has just retired.


We had fish and chips,  which I always enjoy.
I met Rebecca in town yesterday,  which was a nice surprise.
