386ARE TODAY’S TEENAGERS VICTIMS OF FASHION?
387
388
1 A survey among the 1,300 pupils at Caldicot Comprehensive School, near Newport,
2Wales shows that the teenage girls and boys are deeply affected by the images presented by
3the fashion industry in magazines.
4 When we asked whether super slim fashion models influence anorexia (the eating
5disorder in which people go without food) 100 percent of the people who were interviewed
6replied ‘Yes’. It is not just our schoolmates who hold these views. We interviewed
7psychologist Dr. Glenn Waller of London’s Royal Holloway College, an expert on the
8influence of fashion on adolescents. He told us that fashion photographs in magazines have
9a big effect on young people’s self-image, especially females aged 13-19.
10‘Young people are guided by what they see in magazines, newspapers and on TV while they
11are looking around for an identity,’ he said. Magazines provide ideas and these can affect
12sensitive people. If women look at super models who are beanpoles, they may imagine that
13themselves are fatter than they really are. If the media used a wider range of female shapes
14it would be better.’
15 Fortunately, many Caldicot students are not victims of the image-makers. Here is
16what some of them said:
17‘If you are constantly dieting, you can’t enjoy life.’
18‘Fashion is something kids can control. It is a path many teenagers take to break free and
19have fun.’
20‘I find nothing attractive about 1.83 metre models who are about 43 kilos; they just look ill.’
21‘Friends shouldn’t decide you are a failure for wearing unfashionable clothes; if they do, they
22are not very good friends.
23

52 BEATING CULTURE SHOCK
53DIRECTIONS: Read the text.
54 When you have a chance to live and work overseas to get to know another culture from inside you may
55think that it’s a wonderful opportunity, but don’t be surprised if you experience at least some culture shock.
56“When you’re put into a new culture, even simple things can throw you. You become like a child again,
57unable to handle everyday life on your own”, says one expert on culture shock.
58 Taking a course in intercultural studies is one effective way to reduce the effects of culture shock. You
59can also talk to an expatriate who has lived in the country for at least a few years. He can alert you to some
60of the things you’ll need to learn. Finally, prepare yourself by learning about culture shock itself.
61 Someone living in a new culture typically goes through four stages of adjustment.
62 Initial euphoria, or the honeymoon stage, is characterized by high expectations, a focus on
63similarities in the new culture, and a tendency to attach positive values to any differences that are noticed.
64 Culture shock, the second stage, begins very suddenly. The symptoms of culture shock include
65homesickness; feeling of anxiety, depression and mild paranoia. Some people going through culture shock
66try to withdraw from the new culture, spending most of their free time reading novels about home, sleeping
67twelve hours a night, and associating only with others from their own country. Others eat and drink too
68much, feel irritable, and display hostility or even aggression.
69 A period of gradual adjustment is the third stage. Once you realize you’re adjusting, life gets more
70hopeful. You’ve been watching what’s been going on around you, and you’re starting to learn the patterns
71and underlying values of the culture. It feels more natural, and you feel comfortable.
72 The fourth stage, “full adjustment”, takes several years; not everyone achieves it. A lot depends on
73people’s personalities- how rigid or how easygoing they are- and how seriously they try to understand the
74new culture.
75A- DIRECTIONS: Find the meanings of the words below and circle the correct choice.

215 CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

217 I live in a city by the sea and I can’t imagine myself living far away from it. I have always loved the
218sea, even as a child. I learnt how to swim the same time I learnt how to walk. It’s funny, but I (1)
219_______________ being away from it for any length of time. I like how it smells, how it feels, the sound it
220makes, everything about it. I suppose it’s in my blood. In fact, my mother is from a small island and my
221father (2) _______________ in a house right by the beach, which was often flooded during the spring tides.
222Our present family home is not that close to the sea but when it is stormy, if you just step outside the door,
223you can taste the sea on your lips. The sea is truly beautiful but it can also be cruel, as many of my
224relatives who (3) _______________ fishing for living know.
225
226 When the time came for me to leave home I (4) _______________ to live in a place near the sea.
227That’s actually how I (5) _______________ in a city by the sea, with a rich seafaring tradition. I still miss
228home, because there’s no place like home. But at least I have the sea nearby and many wonderful
229memories from the past.
