CE 262 – Foundation Engineering

Every Saturday 9:00-12:00 at the ICE Main Building

Course Instructor: AAAcacio, acacioalexis@gmail.com
Consultation Hours: TTh 3:00-6:00pm, Wed 2:00-6:00pm
Prerequisite : CE264 / COI

Course Description

The course covers the topics related to the design and construction aspects of
foundations. The course is divided into 3 sections :

1-Geologic/Geotechnical Assessment

2-Shallow/Deep Foundation Analysis and Design

3-Performance Assessment and Monitoring of Foundations

From the UP CE262 course catalog:

CE262 – Design and construction aspects of structural foundation systems. Soil-rock

structure interaction, case studies.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

- Correctly assess the geology of the ground

- Understand the physical, mechanical and drainage/hydraulic properties of soils
- Understand a framework of matching soil behavior and the appropriate foundation
system
- Have an understanding of the various types of foundation systems

Course Outline

Throughout the entire semester, the following topics will be discussed:

Introduction and Geotechnical Characterization – The course starts with a basic

understanding on the need for a proper ground condition assessment. It is generally the
type of ground (and the structural load) that determines the choice of foundation system.

The course is divided into 3 main study areas:

1.) Ground Condition Analysis

A first step in ground improvement is a basic understanding of soil behavior. The first
portion of the semester will be spent in understanding the various tests and the properties
of geomaterials. A good ground assessment with an understanding of the structure to be
built is a good baseline in coming up with a safe and economically viable foundation
solution.

Topics Include:

Geology /Geomaterials
Soil Sampling and Field Testing
Laboratory Tests
Nature of Soil
Soil Stresses
Analysis – Deriving Geotechnical Parameters

2.) Shallow and Deep Foundations

The analysis and design of shallow and deep foundations shall be discussed. A greater
portion will be spent on deep foundations.

Topics Include:

Types of Foundations
Shallow Foundations
Deep Foundations

3.) Design Validation / On-site Performance Assessment

Topics Include:

Shallow Foundations:

- Plate Load Test

- Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Test

Deep Foundations :

- Pile Load Testing Program

- Static Load Test
- Vertical / Axial Load Test
- Lateral Load Test
- High Strain Dynamic Test (PDA)
- Low Strain Test (PIT)
- Crosshole Sonic Logging
- Thermal Integrity Testing
- O-Cell / Bi-Directional Testing
Grading System

Class Attendance and Participation (10%) – Your attendance and participation in class
discussions is important. Attendance will be regularly checked within the first 15 minutes
of the regular period. Late and absent students will have a corresponding reduction in
their final grade.

Problem Sets. (20%)

Mid Term Exam (30% each)– to be held at the assigned classroom at regular class hours.

Final Exam (40%) – to be held on May 16, 2020.

Attendance Rule

The University manual states that:

‘When the number of hours lost by the absence of a student reaches 20% of the hours of
recitation, lecture, laboratory, or any other scheduled work in one (1) subject, s/he shall
be dropped from the subject. However, a faculty member may prescribe a longer
attendance requirement to meet special needs. If the majority of the absences are
excused, a student shall not be given a grade of ‘5’ upon being thus dropped. But if the
majority of absences are not excused, the student shall be given a grade of ‘5’ upon being
thus dropped. Time lost by late enrolment shall be considered time lost by absence.’

In case as student is absent, the student shall be required to make a 3 page written report
on the topic missed due immediately on the next class meeting.

If a student accumulates a total of three (3) absences or late(s) within the semester, s/he
shall forfeit obtaining the highest grade possible in the class.

Kindly take note of the following dates:

No Classes on Jan 25 (Chinese New Year), Feb 15, Feb 22, April 11(Holy Week) ,
May 2

May 16, Saturday – Final exam date for CE262 – 9:00-12:00.
