Rationale
In the 21st century, the new driving force behind any business is Data. Therefore, a
new area of study called Data Science has emerged. Data Science has transformed
our society and has given meaning to data. It has converted crude data into
meaningful products that can be used by business to generate insights and recognize
market trends. It has become a necessity to possess data-literacy. Learning Data
Science is the need of the hour; the career of the future.

Data Science is not standalone field. It is comprised of several sub-fields like

Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Core Knowledge. Data Science offers
a very steep learning curve. Data scientists are in high demand and employers don't
find enough graduates to fill their openings. To address the demand, a post graduate
course in Data Science i.e., MSc in Data Science is introduced.
Course Objectives
Apply quantitative modelling and data analysis techniques to solve real world
business problems, communicate findings, and effectively present results using data
visualization techniques.

Demonstrate knowledge of statistical data analysis techniques utilized in business

decision making.

Apply data mining techniques to analyze business problems. Employ tools and
techniques to analyze Big Data.

Learn techniques and tools for Transformation of Data.

Identify the characteristics of dataset and compare the trivial data and big data for
various applications.

To select and implement machine learning techniques and computing environment

that are suitable for the applications under consideration.

To integrate machine learning libraries and mathematical and statistical tools with
modern technologies like Hadoop and MapReduce.

To create data literates, who can be directly employed or start his/ her own work as
Analytics Engineer, Analytics Manager, Big Data Engineer, Business Analyst, Data
Architect, Data Scientist, Data Visualization Specialist, Business Intelligence etc.
