1. Candy Inc. is a specialised sweet shop that only produces goods without sugar.
Candy, the owner has created a strategy targeting a very unique, niche market –
customers who want to enjoy life and food in a healthy manner and are willing to
pay for it. Candy has hired two sales ladies, a bookkeeper and a maintenance
man. Each employee has a set of responsibilities that keep the business running
smoothly. At the beginning of the day Candy gathers her staff and they discuss the
objectives of the day and the tasks they need to complete. At the end of the day,
Candy checks on the production process, has a quick look at the books and
speaks to each staff member for 10 minutes, just to make sure they have no
issues.
• Question
Identify the four management tasks that Candy uses. Which do you think is the
most important? Motivate your answer.

2. Sizwe owns the main supermarket in his town. He is currently analysing his
organisational environment to ensure he responds proactively to the forces that
impact on his business.
Answer :
• The customer is the most important factor in Sizwe’s business. Without
customers he will not be able to sell any goods and the other aspects of the
market environment will become irrelevant. Sizwe needs to make sure that he
consistently evaluates the needs and wants of his customers to ensure he is
providing the correct products at the correct prices. To remain competitive, he
needs to satisfy his customers’ needs in a way that is superior to his competitors.
If Sizwe loses market share, his profits will decrease.

3. What characteristics should entrepreneurs have? Explain why these
characteristics are important or how they can be used to improve business.

4. What are the three management skills managers need to have and how can
they be applied to a recruitment process?

ANSWER:
Cognitive skills: The mental and reasoning capabilities of a manager are needed to view
the organisation as a bigger picture, and judge whether a candidate will fit into the company
and aid in achieving company goals.
Human skills: Managers need human skills in the recruitment process to listen and
communicate effectively and correctly to candidates. A manager will need human skills to judge
if the candidate will fit into the organisational culture.
Technical skills: The manager needs technical skills to negotiate during the recruitment process.
They also need to understand the work that the candidate will perform to identify correctly if
they are competent or not. 8
