The New Education Policy

1. The National Education Policy 2020 was approved by the Union

Cabinet of India on 29 July 2020
2. It outlines the vision of India's new education system. The new
policy replaces the previous National Policy on Education, 1986
3. It is a comprehensive framework for elementary education to
higher education as well as vocational training in both rural and
urban India. The policy aims to transform India's education
system by 2040
Need of New Education Policy

2. To provide practical knowledge to students
3. It aims to make it easier to set up new quality of higher
educational institutes
4. The problems faced by students in higher classes especially in
Coding and practical labs
Purpose of New Education Policy

1. To shape an education system that benefits all of India's

children
2. To increase "higher-order skills" such as creativity, critical
thinking, problem-solving, visualization, and idea generation
3. To provide the much-needed tectonic shift in the pedagogical
structure emphasizing experiential and practical learning
4. Stand-alone institutions should transform themselves into a
multidisciplinary mode or they will have to close
MAJOR RECOMMENDATIONS
Content Curriculum and Pedagogy
1. Mandatory schooling changed from 6-14 years to 3-18 years
2. 12 years of schooling with three years of Anganwadi/ pre-
schooling
3. Existing 10+2 structure of school curriculum will be replaced by
a 5+3+3+4 structure
Regional Languages
1. Emphasis on promoting Indian languages, arts and culture
through education
2. The medium of instruction until Grade 5 and preferably till
Grade 8 will be the mother tongue
3. Sticks to the ‘three language formula’ but does not make it
mandatory
4. Helps increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education
Science, Arts and Commerce gets blurred:
1. No separations are made between vocational and academic
streams

2. Students will have the liberty to choose subjects across streams of

their interest

3. Vocational education to be introduced in schools from Class 6 and

will include internships as well
Low Stakes Board Exams
The existing system of Board and entrance examinations shall be
reformed to
• Encourage holistic development
• Eliminate the need for undertaking coaching classes
1. The focus will be on testing concepts and knowledge application
2. Students will be allowed to take Board Exams on up to two
occasions during any given school year
Common Entrance Exams for Universities
1. Single university entrance exam shall be conducted by the
National Testing Agency
2. NTA will enable most universities to use these common entrance
exams
3. It will help to Reduce the burden on students
Multidisciplinarity

1. Break the disciplinary boundaries

2. Adjust the length of degree programmes
3. Students can get a certificate after a 1-year programme, an
advanced diploma after 2 years, a Bachelor’s degree after 3
years, and a Bachelor’s with research after 4 years
4. Option to re-enter the programme from where they had left off
5. Will take care if any student discontinues his studies temporarily
Teacher Training
1. The new education system is an evolved blend of the digital and
traditional learning system
2. Educators, therefore, have to be trained digitally to blend into
the new digital learning processes
Drawbacks of New Education Policy
1. Students will be taught in the respective regional languages of
the Government school students. This will increase the gap
between sections of the societies
2. There is a problematic teacher-to-student ratio in India, thus
introducing mother languages for each subject in academic
institutes is a problem
3. Students will get his/ her diploma degree in two years and this
might encourage the pupil to leave the course midway
Implementation

1. NEP only provides a broad direction and this can’t happen

immediately
2. The government has set a target of 2040 to implement the
entire policy because it needs sufficient funding and time
3. Delhi University is the first higher education institution to
implement this NEP suggestion. From next year, DU students
can opt for either a three-year honours program, or a four-year
honours program, or a four-year honours program with
research. They can also exit with appropriate certification
