The relief of terrain in a general sense reflects the geomorphological history of that area. This is

because of some association may arise not so much from the contemporary process operating in

the area but more from the recognition of former relief conditions. The influence of relief on soil

profile formation, therefore, soil type, can be direct in those steep slopes tend to develop thin soils,

which also tend to be less weathered than those on gentler slopes in the same area. Relief also

influences the movement of water. The earth's surface, to a large degree, possesses relief because

The terrain of the study area is mostly mountainous except valleys of Saproon in Solan Tehsil,

Doon in Nalagarh tehsil, and Kunihar in Arki tehsil. The elevation ranges from 300-3,000 meters

above the mean sea level (Map 2-7).

The district has a varied topography some parts are low lying while others have a high altitude.

The hills of lower elevation are found in western and southern parts of the district mostly in

Nalagarh Tehsil, while higher ranges start from the central region and extend up to the

northeastern corner of the district comprising Solan, Kasauli, Kandaghat and parts of Arki The track

is hilly, starting from the outer Shiwalik to the middle Himalayas. The slopes are from moderate to

precipitous. Duni-Shimla-Kareru-Taradevi-Kaithlighat-Kandaghat-Solan-Dagshai is the main ridge

forming partition line between the various catchments. At Dagshai, it bifurcates into Dagshai-

Dharmpur-Sanawar-Garkhal-Kasauli and Dagshai-Nsuhli-Shaya ridges.
