C1 and C2 Slot
1. Given the following statements as premises, all referring to
an arbitrary meal: If he takes coffee, he does not drink milk.
He eats crackers only if he drinks milk. He does not take soup
unless he eats crackers. At noon today, he had coffee. Can
we say that he took soup at noon today? If not what is the
correct conclusion?
2. There are two restaurants next to each other. One has a sign
says “Good food is not cheap” and the other has a sign that
says “Cheap food is not good”. Are the signs saying the same
thing? Justify your answer.
3. Prove that (∃x)(p(x) → (∀x)((p(x)∨q(x)) → r(x)), (∃x)(p(x)),
(∃x)(q(x)) ⇒ (∃x)(∃y)(r(x) ∧ r(y)).
4. Find the principal conjunctive normal and principal disjunc-
tive normal form of (p ∧ ¬(q ∨ r)) ∨ (((p ∧ q) ∨ ¬r) ∨ p).
5. Without using the truth table, prove that ((p ∨ q) ∧ ¬(¬p ∧
(¬q ∨ ¬r)) ∨ (¬p ∧ ¬q) ∨ (¬p ∧ ¬r).
6. Write in symbolic form and negate the following statement
Everyone who is healthy can do all kinds of work.
7. Let S = It is sunny, C = Camping is fun, H = The homework
is done, and M= Mathematics is easy. Translate the following
statement into propositional logic. “Mathematics is easy or
camping is fun, as long as it is sunny and the homework is
done”.
8. Write the converse, inverse, contrapositive, and negation of
the following statement: “ A positive integer is a prime only
if it has no divisors other than 1 and itself”. Also, rewrite the
given statement in the form “if p then q”.
9. Suppose that G is a finite group with 60 elements. What are
the orders of possible subgroups of G?
10. Let G be a group and suppose that (ab)2 = a2 b2 for all a and
b in G. Prove that G is an abelian group.

11. Show that if a2 = e for all elements a in a group G, then G
must be abelian.
