MA241 Test 1

Fall 2018 Form A

Please write your full name and Test Form (A or B) on the front of the blue book and
put all answers and work within.
Write your seat number on the front of your blue book.
Work problems in order; number questions, including parts; box your final answers; SHOW
ALL WORK to receive credit.
Only work in the blue book will be graded.
No phones, notes, or other aids besides an instructor approved calculator - no graphing or
differentiation/integration capabilities.
Carefully read and follow instructions. GOOD LUCK!!

( 20 pts) 1. Find the exact length of the curve x = et cos t, y = et sin t, 0 ≤ t ≤ π.

( 14 pts) 2. Find the average value of the function f (x) = 4x2 over the interval [0, 2].

( 18 pts) 3. A force of 40N is required to stretch a spring from its natural length of 3 cm to a
length of 5 cm. How much work is done in stretching the spring from 4 cm to 7 cm?

( 18 pts) 4. Find the coordinates of the center of mass of a lamina in the shape of the region
bounded by the function f (x) = 3x2 , x = 0, x = 2 and the x-axis.

( 15 pts) 5. A semi-circular door is at the bottom of a tank of water. The door has radius
4 meters and the distance between the top of the semi-circle and the surface of the
water is 5 meters. Set up an integral to determine the hydrostatic force against the
door. (The density of water is 1000kg/m3 and gravity is 9.8 m/s2 ) Draw a diagram
and clearly label the x-axis and the y-axis.
NOTE: SET UP the integral to determine the indicated quantity. DO NOT EVALU-
ATE THE INTEGRAL!

( 15 pts) 6. A tank has the shape of an inverted circular cone with height 12m and a base radius
6m. It is filled with water to a height of 10m. Set up an integral to find the work
required to empty the tank by pumping all of the water to the top of the tank (The
density of water is 1000kg/m3 and gravity is 9.8 m/s2 ). Draw a diagram and clearly
label your x-axis and y-axis.
NOTE: SET UP the integral to determine the indicated quantity. DO NOT EVALU-
ATE THE INTEGRAL!!!
