WW 1.2 – Reflective Essay

Engineer as a Profession

Since then, I have always think of becoming an engineer even though a lot of people say
that it is a difficult and challenging career. Based on my rudimentary inquiry, it demands a lot of
knowledge, experience, expertise, proficiency and more further skills. As defined by Oxford,
Engineering is the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use
of engines, machines, and structures, but personally for me, I believe that engineering has lot
more implication and cannot be easily defined with a phrase. It covers a vast broad of fields and
area of activity. Investing a lot of time, money, and space would be requisite so why do I or other
people still want to pursue engineering despite all of this?

Engineers are evidently one of the most in demand profession. They would never be not
needed. A world without them would be disarray and havoc. Ever since, engineers basically
make our lives straightforward. They design a lot of things — machines, structures, vehicles,
tools, gadgets, tunnels, bridges, roads, engines and many more which I find really inspiring.
When I was little, there are things I did not like but one thing for sure is that I am likely to be
fond of creating new stuffs and building something fresh from other objects like toys. Until now,
I enjoy seeking out something that comes from my imagination, so I can say that I may take
delight or pleasure from the engineering profession. It is the same for Engr. Antonio Garcia. He
didn’t like his first course and when he shifted to mechanical engineering, it reminds him that
that is what he really wanted. We see that people follow the things that they love, because it is in
our nature to persistently search for it and falling in love with engineering is not really that hard.
Engr. Garcia still stood up to become what he is now even though for him it is a tough job and he
struggled both from when he was a student and when he was at work.

Here in the country, Engineering is a highly paid, appreciated and respected job and
because of the collar classification, when I say for example that I am an artist, a musician or
dancer, it doesn’t really sound as good as when I say that I am an engineer, a doctor or lawyer.
We can say that engineering is a practical job and a very good choice for earning a lot. It is what
people base on in choosing careers and it’s the same for me. With that said, it is reasonable for
engineering to be hard. It would not be challenging for nothing. As Engr. Garcia advices in our
interview, I will study hard and continue striving to become an engineer because I know that it is
worth it and I will gain that in the future.
