When an integer is divisible by an integer and we could say that is a divisor


of , that is a factor of , or that is a multiple of .

Example 1
(i) Factors of are , , and .
(ii) Factors of are , , and .
(iii) Factors of are , , and .
(iv) Factors of are , , , , and .

We call an integer greater than 1 a prime if its only positive factors are 1 and the
number itself and a composite if it is not a prime.

Example 2
(i) Factors of are and . Positive factors of 7 are and . Therefore
7 is a prime.
(ii) Factors of are , , and . Positive factors of 6 are , 2, 3 and
. Therefore 6 is not a prime. It is a composite.
(iii) Factors of are and . Positive factors of 11 are and .
Therefore 11 is a prime.
(iv) Factors of are , , and . Positive factors of 8 are , 2, 4 and
. Therefore 8 is not a prime. It is a composite.

Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic

Every positive integer greater 1 than can be expressed as a product of primes


uniquely apart from the order in which the primes occur.
