Unit:

Reactivity
● P no 80 an 81
● 6.1_ Metals an their
reaction wit oxygen.
Attainment Targets
● Know that metals have different
levels of reactivity not in
different groups but also within
a group.
● Investigate how different
metals react with substances
like oxygen
Reactivity:
Reactivity is a measure
of how easily an
element will combine
with other elements to
form compounds.

6
Where are the alkali metals?
On the left of the periodic table, the alkali metals.

lithium Li
sodium Na
potassium K
rubidium Rb
caesium Cs
francium Fr
These metals are all very reactive and are rarely found in
nature in their elemental form.
Alkali metals Properties:
The alkali metals are so
reactive that, as elements,
they have to be stored in
oil. This stops them reacting
with oxygen in the air.

They are Soft

The alkali metals are unlike
most other metals, which are
usually hard and dense.
What is the electron structure of alkali metals?
The alkali metals all have one electron in their outer shell.
This means that:
lithium
● They are found in group 1 2,1
of the periodic table.
● They have similar
sodium
physical and chemical
2,8,1
properties.
● They can readily lose the
outer shell electron to form potassium
positive ions with a +1 2,8,8,1
charge and a full outer shell.
Why Reactivity Increases Down the group?

● The atoms of each element get larger

Li going down the group.
● This means that the outer shell electron gets
increase in

further away from the nucleus and is

reactivity

Na shielded by more electron shells.

● The further an electron is from the positive
nucleus, the easier it can be lost in reaction

K ● This is why the reactivity of the alkali

metals increases going down group 1.
