Professionals & Practitioners in the Discipline of

Counseling
Introduction:

While counseling can be done by anyone that a disturbed person can approach in times of
distress and emotionally-critical points of life, Counselors are said to be the professional
practitioners of counseling. They spent time studying and developing their skills for the purpose
of providing support to emotionally-burdened individuals. In school, they are often referred to as
Guidance Counselors; providing guidance to students and even at some cases, teenagers that we
can consider as out-of-school youth. Now we are going to know them better by understanding
their roles and functions as well as other areas that a counselor may be assigned to deal with.

Roles of Guidance Counselors

The critical role of a guidance counselor is to assist a person(s) (clients) in realizing a
change in behavior or attitude, seeking achievement of goals, and finding help. Other related
roles of the guidance counselor may also include:
 Teaching social skills and effective communication skills
 Provide spiritual guidance
 Provide assistance in decision-making and career choices
 Aid a person when coping with a crisis
 Pre-marital & marital counseling
 Counseling in times of grief/loss (divorce, death, amputation)
 Counseling in times of domestic violence/other types of abuse
 Counseling in cases of terminal illness
 Counseling of emotionally and mentally disturbed individuals

Functions of Guidance Counselors

According to Republic Act No. 9258 (Sec. 2-3); a guidance counselor is defined as “a
natural person who has been professionally registered and licensed by a legitimate state entity
and by virtue of specialized training to perform the functions of guidance and counseling”. To
carry out this definition of of guidance counselors, their assigned primary function is to use an
integrated approach to develop a well-functioning individual primarily through:
1. helping a client develop potentials to the fullest;
2. helping a client plan to utilize his/her potentials to the fullest;
3. helping a client plan his/her future in accordance with his/her abilities,
interests, and needs; and
4. sharing and applying knowledge related to counseling, such as
administering to a wide range of human development services.
To do this, a guidance counselor must focus his/her attention in providing opportunities
and easy access for individuals (clients) to counseling services, setting goals and objectives in the
mental and emotional health of people under his/her area of responsibility, and provide effective
assessment and monitoring framework necessary for the effectiveness of counseling services. The
counselor must also improve his/her professional skills in order to ensure that effective methods
and strategies are employed to contribute to the success of the counseling process.

Areas of Specialization of Counselors

The concept of “emotionally-significant moments of a human person’s life” is too broad
and can include a wide and diverse range of aspects. This wide and diverse range of aspects can
be too troublesome, and counseling would be both inefficient and ineffective if concentrated only
to one group or one type of counselors. That is why, counselors also divide their work, as well as
their work force into different areas of specialization where a particular person may specifically
approach depending on his/her situation/condition. Peferson & Neseholz (1987) as cited by
Sampa (2019) identified 11 major areas where counselors work.

These fields of specialization are occupied by a counselor either in the public sector or in

these areas on counselors who had finished a college degree in counseling, however, additional
training or education (usually after college graduation) may be required to fully and effectively be
assigned to a specific field of specialization.
