Colonialism in the Philippines


Spanish Colonization
 Begun when Magellan arrived in the country in 1561 for the spices
 Spanish colonizers arrived in 1565
 Spaniards ruled the country for 333 years which ended due to Filipino
Revolution that sacrificed the lives of many in order to gain freedom
American Colonization
 Started in 1898 when Spaniards sold the country to the Americans
 Philippines soon gained its independence in 1934 by Filipino Nationalist
Manuel L. Quezon
 Manuel L. Quezon – father of the national language / “Ama ng Wikang
Pambansa”
Japanese Occupation
 Occurred between 1942-1945 when Japan occupied the Philippines during
World War II
Bodies of Water
1. Ocean – widest and largest body of water in the world
There are 5 oceans in the world:
a. Pacific Ocean – ocean closest to the Philippines and the largest
b. Atlantic Ocean
c. Southern Ocean
d. Indian Ocean
e. Arctic Ocean
2. Waterfall – water that falls from high places
Examples: Tinago falls, Maria Cristina Falls
3. Lake – a body of water surrounded by land.
Examples: Taal Lake, Lanao Lake
4. Strait – narrow body of water which separates two large land forms
Example: San Juanico Strait
5. River – a body of water that flows toward the sea
Examples: Cagayan River – longest and largest river in the Philippines
Pasig River
6. Sea – a division of ocean that is enclosed by a land
Landforms:
1. Plain – large area of flat land
Example: Rice Granary of the Philippines – largest plain in the country
2. Mountain – a large, tall, rocky area of land that comes up out of the earth’s
surface
Example: Mount Canlaon, Mount Ragang
3. Plateau – area of flat land that is raised higher than the land around it
4. Hill – land smaller than a mountain
Example: Chocolate hills in Bohol
5. Volcano – a mountain that opens downward a pool of molten rock
Example: Mayon Volcano in Albay
Pacific Ocean – largest ocean in the world
Nile River – longest river in the world located in Egypt
Mount Everest – highest mountain in the world located in Nepal
Ojos Del Salado – highest volcano in the world located in Chile
