Worksheet 3.1.

A
S.C.A.M.P.E.R.O
S.C.A.M.P.E.R is an acronym that encompasses 7 different thinking techniques that helps us in
evaluating current and present solutions or products. It is very useful in creative and design thinking that
helps us to turn ideas into innovation.
Use the tool below to help you in the brainstorming of your product or solution with the aid of the
questions listed (note that the list of questions are not exhaustive! You could refer to Appendix A
attached in your workbook for more questions if you feel that the suggested questions listed do not
apply to you)
If a particular technique does not apply to you, you may choose to leave that component blank.

If most of the techniques do not apply to you and you would rather create or design a novel product or
solution, fill in the column “O” (Originate!)

S Substitute Think of substituting part of your product/service or process for

something else. You could think of new ideas in the process ☺

What specific 1. What can I substitute to make an improvement? 2. If I

questions should I swap this for that, can it achieve the intended effect?
ask myself?

Answer: We can substitute the plunger with a syringe for our prototype
made. We can substitute the material(originally plastic) in our
general prototype with cardboard so that we can observe how the
system looks and what scale it should be. We can improve on it,
and therefore create the original idea after refining this.

C Combine Consider the possibility of combining two or more parts of your

problem/solutions to create a better process or product!

What specific 1. What materials / features / components of existing solutions

questions should I can be combined?
ask myself? 2. What is the benefit of combining them?

Answer: We can combine idea 5and idea 6

Idea 5: Rake-like tubes
Idea 6: Hydraulic pump system

The benefit of combining them is that we are able to measure a

specific volume to pump out and pump out the solution into
multiple containers at the same time.
Worksheet 3.1.A

A Adapt Think about how parts of the product / process could be

adapted. Perhaps the nature of the product / process itself
could also be adapted!

What specific 1. Which ideas could I adapt, copy, or borrow from other
questions should I existing solution or products?
ask myself? 2. What can I adapt in this or that way in order to achieve the
intended outcome?

Answer: This does not apply to our set-up.

M Modify Consider different ways to work. Think about changing part or

all of the current solution or product or try to view it from
different perspectives.

What specific 1. What could happen if I altered or expanded a feature or

questions should I component of the product?
ask myself? 2. What if part of the process is modified?

Answer: For the hydraulic press system, we can add valves in the set up,
such that the flow of chemicals is one way and there is no
backflow, when the plunger is pulled back up.
Worksheet 3.1.A

P Put to other purposes Think of how the current solution could be used in other
contexts or purposes. Alternatively, are there solutions from
somewhere else that can be reused in your context to solve
your problem?

What specific 1. What other market can I use this product in?
questions should I 2. Who or what else may be able to use it?
ask myself?

Answer: 1. Factory and industries

2. Milo trucks (can serve multiple customers at one time,
increasing efficiency, so there will be more customers,

😃😃
there will be more money collected, greater profit for the
vendors
3. Drink dispenser(greater efficiency to serve multiple
people at once, more satisfied customers)

E Eliminate Think about what would happen if parts of the process or

product was removed. It could lead you to think of different
ways of tackling the problem ☺

What specific 1. What can I remove without altering its function?

questions should I 2. How can I simplify the current solution or product?
ask myself?
Answer: This is not applicable to us as we cannot remove anything

Worksheet 3.1.A

R Reverse Think of what you could do if your part of your process or

product was done reversely or in a different order

What specific 1. What if I reversed the order it was done?

questions should I 2. What if I rearrange the processes or features of the product,
ask myself? will it still achieve the desired outcome?

Answer: It would not really work because our product ensures a

unidirectional flow of chemicals, so reversing the order will not
achieve the desired outcome.

O Originate Tell me more about your idea ☺

What specific What is our product like?

questions should I How feasible is our design?
ask myself? How is our design effective in achieving the desired outcome?
What is the criteria we used when designing the product?
Is the product safe to be used?
Our set-up is similar to the hydraulic press system. There is a
plunger in the middle of the set up, a container of volume on the
left side and 10 tubes connected to the right side of the set up.
When the plunger is pushed, the chemical from the left side of
the setup flows, and is pushed out of the 10 tubes, allowing more
tubes to be filled up with chemicals in a small period of time.
Our design is feasible as it adapts the concept of pressure in
liquids and is therefore likely to work.
We want our product to be easy, safe to use. We also want it to
be easily refilled and cleaned after use.
The product needs to be carefully handled as hazardous
chemicals might be involved. However, the design itself is safe to
be handled as the user has no direct contact with the chemicals
when using.
