I had occupied for quite literally all
our lives. It was to become the master

numbered. But it was OK they said,
they knew how much my layout meant
to me and promised I could have free

This was huge

of tripping. At this point on the circuit,

the line climbs slightly in order to work
it’s way round a raised patio, so having
it sunk into the floor wasn’t an option.
The line is raised up on house bricks, so
my solution was to cut some steel angle
and place it over the edges of the house
bricks at each end of where the span
would be. I then welded some spans to
join the two edges, giving me a frame
that perfectly hugged the length of a
brick. Once track was attached with
some bolts, it provided a very sturdy
(and not too heavy) bridge, that had
minimal lateral movement and allowed
hassle free carriage of trains.
That was that! I’d done it! A garden
railway had been built. Except....it was
boring. It was just a circuit. It wasn’t
a real railway. It didn’t have a station,
or a passing loop, or a siding, or an
engine shed. None of the good stuff.
What pushed me over the edge was
only being able to run one way round
without lifting the loco and re-railing it.
Something had to be done.

Right: A mixed freight starts to cross the

removable section which lifts out to allow trip
hazard free access to the garage.

A passenger train reaches the summit of a

particularly steep incline to cross Staffordshire
Bridge. The strength of the bridge is in the 1”
angle steel that forms to channel to hold the
track. The wooden structure is purely aesthetic,
and is made from strip wood available form most
large DIY stores in 3 metre lengths.

There was a small, overgrown patch

a small, almost circular loop with
one way in and out, accessible via a
triangular junction off the main circuit.
This would allow a train travelling in
either direction on the main line, to be
switched off towards the smaller loop, to
be turned and sent back the other way.
Much more like it.
Features like this were going to enable

We invite you to relax in the peace of the 1820’s former rectory and

WILSON LOCOMOTIVES
7/8th scale Hunslets
During World War 1, the War
Department required 18 inch gauge
locomotives for use in
the supply depot at Deptford on the

and Hunslet offered a coal fired Waril

Australian firm, Wilson Locomotives,
now produce this locomotive as a a fully
