Research on the following:

1. What is the meaning of beatitude?

- The word beatitude comes from the Latin beatitudo, meaning "blessedness." The phrase

"blessed are" in each beatitude implies a current state of happiness or well-being. This
expression held a powerful meaning of "divine joy and perfect happiness" to the people of
Christ's day.
- the Beatitudes describe the blessedness of those who have certain qualities or experiences
peculiar to those belonging to the Kingdom of Heaven

2. What are the beatitudes based on the Gospel of Matthew?

- In the Revised Standard Version, the nine Beatitudes of Matthew 5:3–12 read as follows:
 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven.
 Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil
against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in
heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

3. Explain briefly each beatitude.

 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- These poor in spirit refers to people with spiritual conditions. It is recognizing
our dire need for God, and for that, He will bring us to His kingdom.

 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

- Mourn in this is not due to loss of a love one but rather, Here Jesus is speaking of
the mourning of repentance.

 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
- Jesus is telling us to keep our strength under control.

 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
- Jesus is saying, Blessed are those that are so desperate to do the will of God. They
will be fillled, their thirst will be quenched, and their hunger satisfied.

 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

- People like to see others get what they deserve, but Jesus is teaching us that even
those undeserving must be offered mercy. Good life won’t come to those who hold grudges,
that’s why this is for those people who show mercy and forgive.

 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
- We often see people through their facade but not through their heart. In here Jesus
wants us to see good in people. We must not focus on fixing our actions but rather in our
hearts. Because fixing your actions won’t change the heart, but focusing your heart on Jesus,
the actions will follow.
 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
- Receiving and spreading peace. It is not simply one who makes peace, but one who
spreads the peace of God that he/she has experienced.

 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven.
- There are some Christians that get persecuted for saying and doing some really
dumb, and hurtful, things, that Jesus never stood for. But when we are persecuted for the
things Jesus was persecuted for then we are blessed.

 Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil
against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in
heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- - This says that, no matter how bad life gets, there will always be reason to rejoice.
Understanding the weigh of words and from where they are coming from, there is something
in us that endures it beyond our current circumstances.
