Radio and the Art of Resistance: a public pedagogy of the

airwaves

1. How do you feel Reading texts? What emotions are trigger and after reading
the text?

First, I selected this text because of the topic. I consider radio as an important way to
engage people and develop social movements. I felt so exciting to realize that academic
theorist like Antonia Darder includes this media source to encourage social justice
movements.

In terms of content, the first aspect that called my attention was the analysis of the radio
in the current world. Although, this is a public and social way to give information to
communities, the government and neoliberalist dynamics have a real and powerful
control on it. The public discourses are manipulated to specific objectives so it is
necessary to crate non-contaminated way to participate and critic currents movements.

Last assumption produced on me a feeling of reflection because I really enjoy the radio,
but rarely analyze the dynamics behind it. Moreover, I was developing a radio program
last semester in UPTC radio and I felt so limited when I was recording the programs
because it was not possible to say certain information like points of view or critic
situations.

Another important aspect about my own reality. Darder expressed that radio can be
consider as a way to help local communities and support civic participation, but also as
political space in which hegemonic system can be challenged. It remained me a
historical event during the carnation revolution on Portugal, because by means of radio
it was developed the national rebellion. Revolutionaries used the radio as a way to
inform people to rebel against government by means of the song :

“Grândola, vila morena” Grândola, swarthy town, land of fraternity ,It is the people who
lead ,Inside of you, oh city” . In general, terms the text produced on me a sense of
participation actively in radio projects in my town and my city because it worth it.

2.Visually represented one of the ideas that talked to your mindbodyspirit.

Calma pueblo que aquí estoy yo
Lo que no dicen lo digo yo
Canción calle 13.

2. Conversation
 Authors encounters:
 I selected Antonia Darder previously but with each text read, I am more
engage with her ideas. In this opportunity, I related some quotes from
Darder work with Freire´s ideas. For instance, Freire says that “The
oppressors do not favor promoting the community as a whole, but rather
selected leaders.”, Darder consider this idea in the first part of the article,
when she said the that neoliberalism system do not promote collective
project like the radio. Moreover, the main resource of radio is “words”
Darder guide those words towers political and social actions, not only to
share information. Freire supports this idea when he conceives that
“language is never neutral”. This powerful idea is related to consider radio a
public pedagogy and way talk and give voice to rural and small
communities.

 Quotes

“the mission of most community radio stations is an emphasis on critical engagement

with controversial, neglected, and non-mainstream perspectives, as well as an
expressed commitment to social justice and democratic life”

Radio seen from social justice perspective to turn it as a tool for changing the worl.

“Public pedagogical approach with students is

fundamentally linked to creating the conditions, through dialogue, reflection, and

action”

Reflection by means of radio programs, reflection by means of project communities.

“Life experience:

“ Dear diary, when I was young , my father told me an story and now I will
tell you ( sorry daddy for telling your personal stories, I know you will
understand) . This story always remind me that some people can be
oppressors only for economics facts. but we can free with intellectual and
human values.
Many years ago, the school in my town was only for girls My dad. who
always liked to study ,went to another town to another school. My
grandmother made a “beautiful ruana” for him to wear on his first day. My
father, a nice peasant, came to school very happy and realized that his
classmates were children of lawyers and wealthy people from the town. The
next day, my dad did not find his ruana and he looked for it in many places.
His classmates had used it to clean the floor and the ruana had been totally
damaged. During the years my father did not say anything about the jokes of
the classmates because he thought it was normal, according to him “he was a
simple peasant”. Finally, he realized how smart and valuable he was and
finished his studies. I love my father, I love education and I love when
oprpesed fight to real free.

 Questions raised after reading the texts

What can we do for education really change society?
Why oppressed do not realize about oppression system?

 Reflections:
Education: It is not easy talk about education in modern world. Academic
success is not synonymous of integral education. We need to go beyond
society guidelines and start new process which create free people and new
world.

Social justice: It is not merely on compassion activity. It implies to develop

many processes and to be coherent with our speech and actions.
