Operations in Function
 When a fundamental operations is applied to two or more
given functions, a new function can be formed.

 Product and Quotient of Functions

 If f and g are functions with domain 𝑫𝒇 and 𝑫𝒈 respectively

their product is the function defined as :

(f • g)(x) = f(x) • g(x)

and their quotient is the function defined as:

𝒇 𝒇(𝒙)
(x) = x≠𝟎
𝒈 𝒈(𝒙)

Example #1
1. Let f(x) = x + 1 and g(x) = 2x – 3
Find (f • g)(x). Simplify your answer.
Operation : Product of Function
Solutions
(f • g)(x) = f(x) • g(x)
= (x + 1) (2x – 3)
= 2𝒙𝟐 – 3x + 2x – 3

(f • g)(x) = 2𝒙𝟐 – x – 3
3
Example #2
2. Let f(x) = 2𝒙𝟐 – 2x + 4 and g(x) = 2x – 3.
Find (f • g)(x). Simplify your answer.
Operation : Product of Function
Solutions
(f • g)(x) = f(x) • g(x)
= (2𝒙𝟐 – 2x + 4) (2x – 3)
= 4𝒙𝟑 – 6𝒙𝟐 – 4x + 6x + 8x – 12

(f • g)(x) = 4𝒙𝟑 – 6𝒙𝟐 + 10x – 12

Example #3
3. Let f(x) = 3𝒙𝟐 + 1 and g(x) = x – 3.

Find (f • g)(x) and if x = -3. Simplify your answer.

For x = -3
Operation : Product of Function (f • g)(x) = 3𝒙𝟑 – 9𝒙𝟐 + x – 3

Solutions
= 3(−𝟑)𝟑 – 9(−𝟑)𝟐 + (-3) – 3
(f • g)(x) = f(x) • g(x)

= (3𝒙𝟐 + 1) (x – 3) = 3(-27) – 9(9) – 3 – 3

= 3𝒙𝟑 – 9𝒙𝟐 + x – 3 = – 81 – 81 – 6
(f • g)(x) = 3𝒙𝟑 – 9𝒙𝟐 + x – 3
(f • g)(-3) = –168
