The New Art Forms: Installation Art, Fashion and Multimedia Arts

I. Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, the students are expected to:

1. Discuss comprehensively the new art forms, i.e., installation art, fashion art and multimedia art
2. Describe these new form of Arts, i.e., installation, fashion, and multimedia arts
3. Enumerate the types of installation and fashion
4. Give the characteristics of fashion
5. Draw concept map on the terminology of Installation Art

II. Introduction

This module presents the new art forms such as installation art, fashion art and multimedia art. Installation arts
are a product of the artist’s creative mind and his/her interaction with the medium of environment. The history of fashion
design refers to the development of the fashion industry which designs clothing and accessories. Multimedia art is an
innovative discipline which seeks to unify a large range of art forms.

On Installation Art

 Installation Art is a product of the artist’s creative mind and his/her interaction with the medium and of
the environment. The medium of installation art varies from indigenous materials (bamboo, stones,
etc.) to technology driven resources (TV, Computer). It could be installed alone or could interface with
the other medium and. Or could be accompanied with a performance.
 Other terms associated with installation art: light art, ephemeral art, environmental art
 Installation artworks (also sometimes described as ‘environments’) often occupy an entire room or
gallery space that the spectator has to walk through in order to engage fully with the work of art.

History of Installation

1. Marcel Duchamp- and his modernist readymades such as his controversial urinal called Fountin.
2. Other influences include the avant-garde Dada exhibitions in Berlin and cologne.
3. The work of the collage artist and sculptor Kurt Schwitters notably his ‘Merzbau’ assemblage which filled a whole building
4. The proun room at the Berlin Railway Station in 1923 designed by the Russian artist El Lissitzky possibly the earliest ever
installation.
5. The Spatial Environments of the painter and sculptor Lucio Fontana and his White Manifesto outlining his theories of
Spatialism.
6. the “4-23” silent musical composition composed by John Cage
7. In addition, the Assemblages and writings of the American avant-garde artist Allan Kaprow notably his 1966 book
‘Assemblage’, Environments, and Happenings’ were also highly influential on the development of the Installation genre.

On Fashion:

 Fashion is an important means of social control. It determines our speech, opinion, belief, recreation, dress, music
art and literature.

Multimedia Art

 Multimedia Art is an innovative discipline which seeks to unify a large range of art forms. This is creatively achieved
by combining an array of artistic insights and crafts such as films, literature, performance, music, and sound, drama,
visual arts or design.
 Multimedia Art can be distinguished from mixed media art in which primarily blends traditional styles of visual art
within a similar domain to make a one form of art move dynamic. For example creating a painting with multiple
types of media (acrylic, watercolour, oil, ink, charcoal, or wax) to develop the appeal of painting.
 Multimedia Art involves a wider scope than mixed media and is considered to have no restrictions, such as the
boundaries of a four edges of a canvas board. There are no rules for multimedia art and mixed media art forms and
movement of hope proudly recognized both.
