CE124 WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

I. PROBLEM SOLVING. Solve the problems below. Write the complete solution and box the final
answer.

Course Question Question

Outcome #
Codes
CO1 1 For a 300mm diameter concrete pipe 3,600m long, find the diameter of a 300-m
long equivalent pipe. Assume the friction factor f be the same for both the pipes.
(5pts)
CO1 2. Two pipes, each 300m long, are connected in series. The flow of water through the
pipes is 150 L/s with a total friction loss of 15m. If one pipe has a diameter of
300mm, what is the diameter of the other pipe? (5pts)
CO1 3. Two pipes 1 and 2 are in series. If the roughness coefficients n1=2n1 and the diameter
D1=500mm, find the diameter D2 if the slope of the energy grade lines are to be the
same. (5pts)
CO1 4. Two pipes 1 and 2 having the same length and diameter are in parallel. If the flow in
pipe 1 is 750 L/s, what is the flow in pipe 2 if the friction factor f of the second pipe
is twice that of the first pipe? (5pts)
CO2 5. A pipe network consist of pipeline 1 from A to B then at B it is connected to pipelines
2 and 3, where it merges again at joint C to form a single pipeline 4 up to point D.
Pipelines 1,2, and 4 are in series connection whereas pipelines 2 and 3 are parallel to
each other. If the rate of flow from A to B is 10 L/s and assuming f = 0.02 for all
pipes, Determine the flow in each pipe and the total head lost from A to D. (25pts)

Pipelines Length (m) Diameter (mm)

1 3,000 200
2 2,200 300
3 3,200 200
4 2,800 400
