OPTOMETRY DEPARTMENT

First Semester S.Y. 2020-2021

NAME: Kwenzie Arbin N. Fortaleza DATE: August 27, 2021

ACTIVITY # __1__

“NATURE AND PROPAGATION OF LIGHT & SHADOWS and ILLUMINATION”

LEARNING OBJECTIVES (MAKE YOUR OWN):

1. To be able to understand that light can be characterized as a wave

2. To know the kinds of shadow being made

3. To explain the relationship between wave, wave front and rays

INTRODUCTION: (DISCUSS THE NATURE AND PROPAGATION OF LIGHT)

Light is an electromagnetic wave that can be seen by the naked eye. It travels at a constant speed of
300,000 km/s. Visible light is usually defined as having wavelengths in the range of 400–700
nanometres (nm), between the infrared (with longer wavelengths) and the ultraviolet (with shorter
wavelengths. It has been established that in geometrical optics, the propagation of light is described in
terms of rays and pencils. Light can also interact with obstacles in a way that cannot be predicted by rays
which is called Diffraction.
MATERIALS:

 Ruler
 Pencil
 Ballpen
 Colors

ACTIVITIY:

1. Illustrate the Light as a WAVE and label its parts.

2. Illustrate the relationship between wave, wave front and rays.

3. Draw the elemental units of light
a. RAY

b. PENCIL OF LIGHT
a. PARALLEL PENCIL

b. DIVERGENT PENCIL
c. CONVERGENT PENCIL

c. BEAM OF LIGHT

4. Draw the formation of shadow by sources:

a. POINT SOURCE
b. EXTENDED SOURCE

5. Draw the formation of illumination by sources:

a. POINT SOURCE

b. EXTENDED SOURCE
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME:

1. Discuss the importance of knowing the elemental units of light (5pts)

-Because it what makes light more understandable and more predictable on where it would
point or reflect at. It enables us to understand and use the concept of light in the practical
world, specifically, how the light enters our eyes and project images and even in the usage of
lenses.

2. Discuss the importance of learning the Electromagnetic spectrum (5pts)

Electromagnetic Spectrum lets us know the different characteristics of existing waves, visible or
invisible, and be able to apply it in the real world. For instance, X-rays are used in medical
application or for security purposes, Infrared Rays is used to detect heat from body, and many
more.

3. What do you think is the importance of studying shadow and illumination formation in
OPTOMETRY? (5pts)
According to Ernest A Hutchinson, Opt.D., prescribing appropriate illumination is becoming an
important part of the Optometrist’s service to his consultant. We need to take in consideration
the amount or intensity of light that enters our eyes, and in relation to shadow, the closer the
light, the longer the shadow, meaning, we need to be at a right distance from the source to limit
the light we see
PROBLEM SOLVING:

1. For each position in the figure above, do the following: (BE SURE TO OBSERVE PROPER SIGN
CONVENTION)

a. Determine the type of vergence (convergence, divergence, parallel).

b. Calculate the amount of vergence in diopters.

2. An opaque disk 36 inches in diameter is placed 84 inches from the light source which is 24
inches in diameter. What are the diameters and area of umbra and penumbra on a screen 240
inches from the opaque disk? Illustrate the problem and solve in feet.
3. What is the apparent angle elevation of the sun when a high rise building 20ft high cast a
shadow of 30ft long on a horizontal pavement? Illustrate and solve.
