OPTOMETRY DEPARTMENT
ACTIVITY # __1__
Light is an electromagnetic wave that can be seen by the naked eye. It travels at a constant speed of
300,000 km/s. Visible light is usually defined as having wavelengths in the range of 400–700
nanometres (nm), between the infrared (with longer wavelengths) and the ultraviolet (with shorter
wavelengths. It has been established that in geometrical optics, the propagation of light is described in
terms of rays and pencils. Light can also interact with obstacles in a way that cannot be predicted by rays
which is called Diffraction.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME:
3. What do you think is the importance of studying shadow and illumination formation in
OPTOMETRY? (5pts)
According to Ernest A Hutchinson, Opt.D., prescribing appropriate illumination is becoming an
important part of the Optometrist’s service to his consultant. We need to take in consideration
the amount or intensity of light that enters our eyes, and in relation to shadow, the closer the
light, the longer the shadow, meaning, we need to be at a right distance from the source to limit
the light we see
PROBLEM SOLVING:
1. For each position in the figure above, do the following: (BE SURE TO OBSERVE PROPER SIGN
CONVENTION)
