ACTIVITY 1.

Mini-Ethnography

1. Conduct a field observation by going to a community, group, society, public event, or any
public place. This may be an actual place/event or a virtual one.

I conducted a field observation on the Gantimpala Theater Foundation

in Manila.

2. Observe the group or community you are visiting and keep notes of your observations.

Gantimpala Theater Foundation is a self-sustaining, independent

theater, which is a really interesting and a great attribute in their company.
They promote goodwill and bring the theater closer to audiences as they go
to nearby provinces and other localities to show their plays. They entertain
and educate more than half-a-million audiences throughout the country.

notes.

o.
In one of their famous plays, Kanser, based on Jose Rizal’s novel Noli
rs e
Me Tangere. I interviewed the director of the play, Franniel Zamora. I
ou urc
interviewed him about his life, and what inspired him from doing the
theatrical approach.

INTO THE PRACTICE AND INDUSTRY OF FASHION AND NOW, MUSICAL

THEATER?”
“I am a theatre artist and a breadwinner, so I needed to find a job that will
support my family. My being involved with fashion was meant for regular

income. But I never really left the industry that I wanted to be part of. I
ar stu

designed costumes for theater plays, suits and gowns for friends in showbiz
and outfits for live entertainment.”

“WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE THEATRE THAT YOU LOVE MOST?”

“Everything. Like what I have said, it’s the creating and putting together

process that really keeps me loving what I do. “

PIECE TODAY? COULD YOU TELL US WHAT MAKES THIS MUSICAL SO

SPECIAL?”
I always believed in the works of Jose Rizal and I, as an artist, believe that I
have the responsibility to educate the audience, most especially the young
ones, of this masterpiece of our national hero. We need to do something to
post awareness and promote our culture and heritage to the new generation.

The collaborative geniuses that work behind this production really make it
special--the creative/artistic and production staff and the cast.

4. Write a report about your mini-ethnography.

Research Background
I chose this theatrical group because of all the whole
organization of fellow theatrical groups, this one is the most uplifting
among the others. They started as an independent organization and
stood what they do and love, no matter the consequences that they
claimed throughout the years. Now, the new generations are the one
who are doing plays and have been continuing until today. I mean, how
cool is that? This theatrical group really met the expectation that I was
expecting them to be, and it’s great.

Inside the Community

m
What I have observed inside their organization is openness. They

er as
are so close to one another and I think it is the perfect example of

co
being true to your fellow members by not having a third-party inside

eH w
the community to make a play possible. They are always volunteering

o.
about everything like they have these kinds of departments like
rs e
assigning some members to do some work in props, costumes,
ou urc
lighting, etc.

Reflection
o

With the growing awareness of theater in the country, brought

aC s

about by the successes of Filipino thespians here and abroad, the

vi y re

nation is clamoring for more and more productions, where theater

companies exhibit their homegrown talents and creative minds.
Theatrical productions were brought closer to a lot more people--the
ed d

antithesis that theater only caters to a niche audience. The productions

ar stu

in the past year reached varied audiences with themes that touched
various sensitive topics and controversies; these productions proved to
be not only a form of entertainment but also a receptacle of personal
reflections for some audiences saw things in a way that the others did
is

not. It's a good thing that they promote our heritage and turn it into a
Th

play so that people can watch and enjoy it while watching it in the
theater.
