DYEING POLYESTER BLENDS
 Dyeing of polyester / cotton

 Different effect can be produced

 Solid shade dyeing, contrast dyeing, reserve dyeing, two tone dyeing

 Solid shade dyeing: Both the components of the blends are dyed with same

shade and tone (Also known as ‘Union dyeing’)

 Contrast dyeing: Two components of the blends are dyed in different

shades (Also known as ‘Cross dyeing’)

 Reserve dyeing: Only one component of the blend is dyed whereas the

second component is left undyed

 Two tone dyeing: The two components are dyed in different tone

• Polyester cotton blend can be dyed by batch-wise technique or
continuous method

• For continuous dyeing, thermosol process is most important. Many

classes of dyes and dyeing processes are suitable for polyester /
cotton blends. Polyester fibre is always dyed with disperse dyes,
whereas the cotton part of the blend can be dyed practically with
all classes of dyes suitable for dyeing 100% cotton.

• In batch wise method the following processes are used

– Two bath dyeing process: Dyeing polyester with disperse dyes and
subsequently dyeing cotton with vat / reactive / azo etc.

– One bath dyeing process: Using both the dyes in the same bath

– Inverse dyeing process: Dyeing the cotton component first, followed

by dyeing the polyester component

• Continuous method of P / C blend dyeing

– Padding fabric with disperse and vat dye

– Intermediate drying

– Thermosol treatment

– Reduction Clearing (Removal of superficial disperse dye

and reduction of vat dye)

– Oxidation for vat dye fixation

Dyeing of Polyester / Nylon
• All disperse dyes both polyester and nylon. But, with some
disperse dyes the two kind of fibres do not get dyed with
same shade and shades may differ quite remarkably

• The fastness properties of disperse dyes on nylon fibres are

lower than those of polyester fibre

• The nylon can be dyed selectively with 1:1 or 1:2 metal

complex dyes and the polyester with disperse dye
