PART – A
(Compulsory Question)

1 Answer the following: (10 X 02 = 20 Marks)
(a) Distinguish straight beam and curved beam.
(b) State the advantages and disadvantages of flat belt drive over V-belt drive.
(c) List specifications for tension springs.
(d) List out the applications of power screws.
(e) Enumerate the classification of bearings.
(f) Differentiate between ball and roller bearing.
(g) What is circular pitch?
(h) Define helical gear.
(i) What is the function of the piston ring?
(j) What is bore and stroke length in the IC engine?

PART – B
(Answer all five units, 5 X 10 = 50 Marks)
UNIT – I
2 Derive an expression to find the bending stress at inner and outer fibre of curved beam.
OR
3 The following data are given for a V-belt drive:
Design power = 20 kW
Diameter of driving pulley = 200 mm
Speed of smaller pulley = 1120 rpm
Velocity ratio = 3
Groove angle = 38o
Centrifugal force = 125 N
Permissible tension in the belt = 550 N
Coefficient of friction = 0.30
Angle of contact at smaller pulley = 156o
Centre distance = 2 m
Determine the number of belts and the life of the belt. The belt is to be used for 8 hours per day.
Assume if any data missing appropriately.

UNIT – II
4 Design a helical compression sprint to support an axial load of 300 N. The deflection under the load
is limited to 60 mm. The spring index c = 6. The spring is made of chrome-vanadium alloy steel and
factor of safety as 2. Assume if any data missing appropriately.
OR
5 A double-threaded power screw, with ISO metric trapezoidal threads, is used to raise a load of
300 kN. The nominal diameter is 100 mm and the pitch is 12 mm. The coefficient of friction at screw
threads is 0.15. Neglecting collar friction, determine the following: (i) Torque required to raise the
load. (ii) Torque required to lower the load. (iii) Efficiency of the screw.

6 Following data is given for a 360 hydrodynamic bearing:
Radial load = 6.5 kN
Journal speed = 1200 rpm
Journal diameter = 60 mm
Bearing length = 60 mm
Minimum oil film thickness = 0.009 mm
The class of fit is H&e& (fine) normal running fit. Specify the viscosity of the lubricating oil that you
will recommend for these applications.

7 The following data is given for a 360 hydrodynamic bearing:
Radial load = 30 kN
Journal diameter = 75 mm
Bearing length = 75 mm
Journal speed = 3600 rpm
Radial clearance = 0.15 mm
Inlet temperature = 40oC
The temperature-viscosity relationship is as follows:

Assume that the total heat produced in the bearing is carried by the total oil flow. The specific gravity
and specific heat of the lubricant are 0.96 and 1.76 kJ/kg oC respectively. Assume if any data
missing. Determine the power lost in friction and the requirement of oil flow.
UNIT – IV
8 Design a pair of spur gear to transmit 20 kW of power while operating 8-10 hours/day sustain
medium shock from a shaft rotating at 1000 rpm to a parallel shaft which is rotating at 310 rpm.
Assume number of teeth on pinion to be 31 and 20o full depth involute tooth profile the material for
pinion is C40 steel untreated whose design stress is 206 MPa and fro gear cast steel 0.2% carbon
untreated whose design stress is 127 MPa. Heck the gear for dynamic load if the dynamic load
factor c = 522 and for wear load taking load stress concentration factor k = 0.279. Suggest a suitable
hardness.
OR
9 Design a pair of helical gear to transmit a power of 20 kW from a shaft running at 1500 rpm to a
parallel shaft to be run@450 rpm. Suggest the suitable hardness for the gear pair. Minimum number
of teeth on pinion (Z = 18 pinion). Assume if any data missing.
UNIT – V
10 A four-stroke diesel engine working on diesel cycle has the following specifications:
Compression ratio = 15, stroke volume = 100 cc, cut-off = 10% of the stroke volume,
power = 5.0 kW, speed = 1500 rpm with a possibility of over speeding of 2000 rpm, cylinder material
= cast iron. Determine: (i) The cylinder bore. (ii) The cylinder length. (iii) The wall thickness.
(iv) The thickness of cylinder head.
OR
11 Design a cast iron piston for a single cylinder four-stroke engine from following data:
Cylinder bore = 100 mm, stroke = 120 mm, maximum gas pressure = 5 N/mm2, brake mean
effective pressure = 0.65 N/mm2, fuel consumption = 0.227 kg/kWh, speed = 2200 rpm. Assume
suitable data if required.
