The hydraulic safety block is the main component for the release of the emergency trip on the 2-out-of-3 principle.

1. Functions
- Conversion of electric into hydraulic signals and logic circuit connection to the 2-out-of-3 signal
selection scheme:

The individual tripping criteria are connected to the three parallel-connected solenoid valves.

- Release of the emergency trip by means of the valve closing mechanism, if a failure is detected and
reported simultaneously by at least 2 out of 3 parallel-connected channels.

- Monitoring its own operability by channel failure indication (no transmitter monitoring).

- Each channel can be individually tested without service interruption or affecting its protective
function.

- Emergency trip release in the event of a power or oil supply failure.

2. Mode of operation

2.1. Operating position (ready for operation)

The three magnet coils of the solenoid valves (1), (2) and (3) are exited and obstruct the flow through the
solenoid valve.

Thus control oil pressure P1 builds up in the channels (11), (12) and (13) downstream of the inlet orifices
and acts on the bottom sides of the stepped pistons (4), (5) and (6).

Each channel, i.e., each solenoid valve acts on two stepped pistons, maintaining them in their upper final
position. In this position the stepped pistons shut off the drain of the control oil P1 which is admitted
through a further inlet orifice (14), the piston of the valve closing device (7) is put into continuous flow
position and the emergency stop valve is kept open. The pressure switches (8), (9) and (10) are activated
by the pressure built up ahead of the solenoid valves.

2.2. Normal tripping

The 3 solenoid valves (1), (2) and (3) are de-energized and open the drain oil passages. Hence, no
pressure can build up on the bottom side of the stepped pistons and the drain of the pressure chamber
(14) acting on the upper side of the valve closing mechanism’s piston is unblocked. A slight intermediate
pressure is created by a certain narrowing of the drain cross section, which keeps the stepped pistons in
their final bottom positions. The valve closing mechanism will move into drain position in case of a
pressure drop so that the shutdown valve closes.

2.3. Operating in case of a channel fault

If, due to a fault, one solenoid valve remains de-energized or does not close because of a mechanical
seizure, no control oil pressure is admitted to the bottom side of the associated piston due to the open
drain. However, control oil enters the stepped area of the stepped piston through the connecting bore to
the neighbouring solenoid valve, keeping its drain closed. The pressure on the upper side of the valve
closing mechanism’s piston is maintained. The pressure switch of the faulty channel remains
pressureless.

2.4. Tripping position in the case of a channel fault

If, due to a fault, one solenoid valve remains energized in case of an emergency shutdown, or if the valve
seizes mechanically in „closed position“, control oil pressure is admitted to the bottom sides of the two
associated stepped pistons so that the drains on top of them are closed. Since no control oil is admitted to
the third piston, it opens the drain on top. The pressure discharge will trip the shutdown valve via the valve
closing mechanism. The pressure switch of the faulty channel is actuated.

2.5. Special arrangement

If additional shut-down criteria - formed on the hydraulic side - are to be considered (mechanical
overspeed protection, for example), they must be incorporated on the upper side of the valve closing
mechanism’s piston (signal line (15). With hydraulic speed governor the control valve closing mechanism
is connected to connection „C“ to ensure, that the control valves are also closed in the event of a
shutdown.

With an electronic speed control three pressure switches are to be provided at the connection „C“ to cut
off the speed governor in case of an emergency shut-down
