The Burial of the Dead: Rite One

Rite at Church Entrance

Sprinkle body with holy water saying:

Celebrant:

I bless the body of Gladys, with the holy water that recalls her/his
baptism of which Saint Paul writes: All of us who were baptized into
Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. By baptism into his death we
were buried together with him, so that just as Christ was raised from the
dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we
have been united with him by likeness to his death, so shall we be united
with him by likeness to his resurrection.

A pall, in remembrance of the baptismal garment, is placed on the coffin by family members.
Celebrant says:

On the day of her/his baptism, Gladys put on Christ. In the day of

Christ’s coming, May she/he be clothed with glory.

All stand for opening hymn

I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord;

he that believe in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live;
and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.

I know that my Redeemer lives,

and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth;
and though this body be destroyed, yet shall I see God;
whom I shall see for myself and my eyes shall behold,
and not as a stranger.
For none of us lives to himself,
and no one dies to himself.
For if we live, we live for the Lord.
and if we die, we die for the Lord.
Whether we live, therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord;

for they rest from their labors.
The Celebrant says Collects, first saying

Celebrant: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit
People: Amen
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Celebrant: Let us pray.

Burial I 469

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our

prayers on behalf of your servant Gladys, and grant her/him an
entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of
thy saints; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and for ever. Amen.

The people sit

First Reading: Song of Songs Chapter 2:1-17

A reading from the Song of Songs

The sound of my lover! here he comes*

springing across the mountains,
leaping across the hills.

My lover is like a gazelle*

or a young stag.
See! He is standing behind our wall,
gazing through the windows,
peering through the lattices.

My lover speaks and says to me,

“Arise, my friend, my beautiful one, and come!

For see, the winter is past,

the rains are over and gone.

The flowers appear on the earth,

the time of pruning the vines has come,
and the song of the turtledove is heard in our land.

The fig tree puts forth its figs,

and the vines, in bloom, give forth fragrance.
Arise, my friend, my beautiful one, and come!

My dove in the clefts of the rock,*

in the secret recesses of the cliff,
Let me see your face,
let me hear your voice,
For your voice is sweet,
and your face is lovely.”
Catch us the foxes,* the little foxes
that damage the vineyards; for our vineyards are in bloom!

My lover belongs to me and I to him;

he feeds among the lilies.

Until the day grows cool* and the shadows flee,

roam, my lover,
Like a gazelle or a young stag
upon the rugged mountains.

Response: Psalm 27 (Ps. 27:1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 13-14)

The Lord is my light and my salvation;

whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold[a] of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?

One thing I asked of the Lord,

that will I seek after:
to live in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the Lord,
and to inquire in his temple.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud,

be gracious to me and answer me!

“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!”

Your face, Lord, do I seek.

Do not hide your face from me.

Do not turn your servant away in anger,
you who have been my help.
Do not cast me off, do not forsake me,
O God of my salvation!

I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord

in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord;

be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!
Gospel: John 14:1-6

All stand

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
People: Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have
faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house there are many
dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going
to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will
come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also
may be. Where I am going you know the way." Thomas said to him,
"Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the
way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No
one comes to the Father except through me."

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Offertory
Bread and Wine brought forth

Preparation of the gifts

Preparing and Blessing Bread

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we have received
the bread we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us the bread of life.

Blessed be God for ever.

By the mystery of this water and wine

may we come to share in the divinity of Christ
who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
Preparing and Blessing Wine

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we have received
the wine we offer you:
fruit of the vine and work of human hands,
it will become our spiritual drink.

Blessed be God for ever.

After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

With humble spirit and contrite heart

may we be accepted by you, O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your sight this day
be pleasing to you, Lord God.

Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin.

Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he
says:

Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters),

that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God,
the almighty Father.

The people rise and reply:

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands

for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good and the good of all his holy Church.
Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer over the Offerings, at the end of which the
people acclaim:

Lord,
Receive the gifts we offer for the salvation of Gladys.
May Christ be merciful in judging our sister/brother for she/he believed
in Christ
As Her/his Lord and Savior.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

People: Amen.

Preface

Celebrant:
The Lord be with you.

People:
And with your spirit.

Celebrant, continues:
Lift up your hearts.

People:
We lift them up to the Lord.

Celebrant, adds:
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People:
It is right and just.

The Priest continues with the Preface.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

In him the hope of blessed resurrection has dawned,

that those saddened by the certainty of dying
might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come.
Indeed for your faithful, Lord,
life is changed not ended,
and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust,
an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven.

And so, with Angels and Archangels,

with Thrones and Dominions,
and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven,
we sing the hymn of your glory,
as without end we acclaim:

The Priest concludes the Preface with the people singing or saying aloud:
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Congregation kneels.

Eucharistic Prayer Continues

You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy,
therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them
like the dewfall so that they may become for us the Body and + Blood of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion,
he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT,

FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice

and, once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,

FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

The Priest says:

The mystery of faith.

The people continue, acclaiming

We proclaim your Death, O Lord,

and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his Death and Resurrection,
we offer you, Lord, the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation,
giving thanks
that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you.
Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

COMMEMORATION OF THE LIVING

Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with N. our Pope and N.
our Bishop* and all the clergy.

COMMEMORATION OF THE DEAD

Remember your servant Gladys,
Whom you have called
From this world to yourself.
Grant that she/he who was united with your Son in a death like his,
May also be one with him in his Resurrection.

Remember also our brothers and sisters

who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,
and all who have died in your mercy:
welcome them into the light of your face.

Have mercy on us all, we pray,

that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with the blessed Apostles,
and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,
we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life,
and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer the Priest takes the chalice and the paten with the
host and, raising both, he alone says:

Through him, and with him, and in him,

O God, almighty Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honor is yours,
for ever and ever.

People: Amen.

THE COMMUNION RITE

The Lord’s Prayer

The congregation stands and the Priest says:

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,
the power and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Breaking of the Bread

Communion

After his private prayers of preparation the Priest genuflects, takes the host and, holding it
slightly raised above the paten or above the chalice says aloud:

Behold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

Distribution of Communion

Post-communion Prayer

Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have
fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and
Blood of your Son Jesus Christ, and have given unto us a
foretaste of your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament
may be for us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our
inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither
sorrow nor crying, but the fullness of joy with all your saints;
through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
The Commendation

The Celebrant and other ministers take their places at the body.

The celebrant sprinkles the body with holy water and incenses the body.

The Celebrant, facing the body, says

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend thy servant

Gladys. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your
own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own
redeeming. Receive her/him into the arms of your mercy, into the
blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious
company of the saints in light. Amen.

The Celebrant, or the Bishop if present, may then bless the people, and
a Deacon or other Minister may dismiss them, saying

Celebrant: Peace be with you.

People: And with your spirit.

Celebrant: May Almighty God bless you, in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Celebrant: Let us go forth in the name of Christ.

People: Thanks be to God.
