IMPORTANT NOTES
The HumaPen MEMOIR is a pen used to inject insulin. Read and understand all of the important notes before giving injections. Keep these
directions for future reference.
☞ The HumaPen MEMOIR is for use only with Humalog (insulin lispro injection [rDNA origin]) 3 mL insulin cartridges.
☞ Always prime before each injection. Do NOT use the pen if a stream of insulin does not flow during priming. If you do not prime until
insulin comes out, you may get too much or too little insulin. For more information, see Step 8.
☞ HumaPen MEMOIR is suitable for use with Becton, Dickinson and Company insulin pen needles.
☞ Do NOT store the pen in the refrigerator. Condensation may form inside the pen, which can damage the electronics.
☞ Do NOT use the pen and contact Lilly at 1-800-LillyRx (1-800-545-5979) or your healthcare professional if any of the following items
occur:
- Any part of your pen or cartridge appears broken or damaged.
- The dose in the display appears to be different than the amount dialed.
☞ Before using the pen for the first time, check that the pen is set to the correct time and date. To change the settings, go to the
Setting Time and Date section.
☞ Always carry a spare insulin delivery device in case your pen is lost or damaged.
☞ The HumaPen MEMOIR is not recommended for the blind or visually impaired without the assistance of a sighted individual trained to use it.
☞ The numbers on the cartridge holder give an estimate of the amount of insulin remaining in the cartridge. Do not use these numbers for
measuring an insulin dose.
☞ The 3-year battery life may be shortened if the dose knob is pressed without a cartridge inserted in the pen.
Replacement
HumaPen MEMOIR is designed to be used for 3 years. When the battery symbol starts to flash, there is less than 3 weeks of battery life left.
Contact your healthcare professional to get a prescription for a new HumaPen MEMOIR.
When you see this symbol (☞) throughout the manual, pay special attention to these important notes.

☞ Make sure the cartridge holder is completely and securely screwed onto the pen body before each injection. If the cartridge
holder is not correctly attached, you may get too much or too little insulin.
COMMON QUESTION
What should I do if … I cannot attach the cartridge holder to the pen body?
Check that the insulin cartridge is fully inserted into the cartridge holder. Then, make sure the cartridge holder is
completely and securely screwed onto the pen body, see Step 4.

COMMON QUESTIONS
What should I do if … a part of the pen display is missing or stays on all the time?

professional.

10
☞ Prime every time before injecting. Priming fills any empty spaces inside the needle or cartridge with insulin and checks
that insulin will flow out of your pen when you inject. You may need to prime several times to get a stream of insulin
coming out of the needle. If you do NOT prime, you may get too much or too little insulin.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What should I do if … insulin does not come out when I prime the pen?
The needle may be clogged, the cartridge holder may not be completely screwed on, or the foot of the injection screw may
not be against the cartridge plunger. You may not be able to see the foot of the injection screw, but repeating the priming
step will move it to touch the plunger.
Priming until you see a stream of insulin will ensure that the foot of the injection screw is against the
cartridge plunger as shown here. Cartridge Foot Injection

1. Repeat the priming steps until a stream of insulin is seen, see Step 8.
2. If you do not see a stream of insulin after several attempts, attach a new needle.
3. Repeat the priming steps until a stream of insulin is seen.
4. If you are still unable to get insulin flowing out of the needle, do NOT use the pen.
Contact Lilly at 1-800-LillyRx (1-800-545-5979) or your healthcare professional.
What should I do if … there is an air bubble in the cartridge after I prime?
Hold the pen with the needle facing upwards and pointing away from your face. Tap the insulin cartridge holder gently with
your finger so any air bubbles can collect near the top. Repeat the priming step. A small air bubble may remain in the
cartridge after the completion of the priming step. If you have properly primed the pen, this small air bubble will not affect
your insulin dose.
11
SETTING AND INJECTING YOUR INSULIN DOSE
☞ Do NOT attempt to inject your insulin by turning the dose knob. You will NOT receive your insulin by turning the
dose knob. You must PUSH the dose knob straight in for the dose to be delivered.
12
☞ Do NOT attempt to change the dose while injecting.
☞ Do NOT push the dose knob unless a needle is attached to the pen because this could jam the pen. Removing the
cartridge holder will allow you to release the jam. Then continue from Step 2.
☞ HumaPen MEMOIR has a post-injection timer. There is a 5-second duration from the end of injection (0 showing in the
display) to when it goes back to READY MODE. To use this timer, remove the needle from your skin when the display
returns to READY MODE.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What should I do if … insulin comes out when I dial backwards?
The dose knob may have been accidentally pushed when dialing backwards. To avoid this, do NOT push the dose knob when
dialing backwards. Only push the dose knob when injecting.
What should I do if … the dose knob does not go to 0 when I inject my dose?
Your cartridge may not have had enough insulin for your entire dose. The number in the display window is the amount you
did NOT receive. To get the rest of your dose: Dial down to 0. This will save the first injection in dose memory and return pen
to READY MODE. Next, change the insulin cartridge, see Changing Insulin Cartridge section, and perform Steps 3 to 13
injecting only the dose amount that you did not receive.
What should I do if … it is difficult to push down the dose knob when I try to inject?
a) Pressing the dose knob down quickly may make the button harder to push. Pressing the dose knob more slowly may
make it easier.
b) Pressing on the side of the dose knob may make it harder to inject. Be sure to press straight in on the dose knob as
shown in Step 11.
c) The force required to push the dose knob depends on the needle diameter. See your healthcare professional to determine
which needle diameter is best for you.
d) The dose knob may become harder to push if foreign material (dirt, dust), insulin, or other liquids get inside the pen.
Replace the pen if the dose knob gets too hard to push.

☞ Remove the needle after completing each injection. Do NOT store the pen with the needle attached.
☞ Directions regarding needle handling are not intended to replace local, healthcare professional or institutional policies.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What should I do if … I want to turn my pen off?
To prevent your pen from accidentally being turned off during an injection, there is no OFF button. Your pen will not
turn off unless the display is in READY MODE. The pen will automatically turn off after 30 seconds of inactivity.

VIEWING DOSE MEMORY
HumaPen MEMOIR has a dose memory that allows you to see the time, date and amount of the last 16 doses that were
delivered including the priming doses. To see stored doses:
☞ Since the dose memory saves the date and time of an injection, it is important to keep the pen set to the correct date
and time.
☞ Because the dose memory cannot identify insulin types, it is recommended that a single pen be used with a single
insulin type.

CARE, STORAGE AND DISPOSAL
• Keep the pen away from dust, extreme hot or cold (freezing) temperatures and direct sunlight.
• Do NOT store the pen in the refrigerator.
• For your insulin cartridge, refer to Information for the Patient for complete storage instructions.
• Keep the pen and case away from water, moisture or wet surfaces as pen and case are not watertight.
• Your injection button may become harder to push if the inside of your pen gets dirty with insulin, food,
drink or other materials.
• Wipe the pen cap, pen body and case with a water-dampened cloth to clean it. Do NOT use alcohol on
the pen body or display window.
• Do NOT use bleach for cleaning or wiping your pen.
• Do NOT use oil or other lubrication on any pen parts.
• Do NOT cover the pen in liquid.
• Follow local regulations for disposal of used pen needles.
• Follow local regulations for disposal of the pen (pen contains lithium batteries).
• For your safety you cannot replace the pen batteries.
If you have any questions or problems with your HumaPen MEMOIR, contact Lilly at
