All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is a historical novel written in 2014. In 2015
the novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize as the best fiction book. The novel was on the list of The
New York Times as one of the best-selling novels of 2014.
The story is set in France and Germany in the years of the World War II, namely during the
German occupation of France. The central figures are two children – German boy and a blind
French girl who are struggling through the horrors of the war to survive. The girl’s name is Marie-
Laure LeBlanc. She is a six-year old girl whose father, a widower, works at the Natural History
Museum in the capital of France. Marie-Laure cannot see, but she has mastered the skill of
finding her way in the labyrinth of Paris streets using a scale-model that her father has made. The
girl’s father is a good teacher – he hides the presents in the elaborately carved boxes to teach
her see using other senses rather than seeing with her eyes, which is a good way to sharpen her
mind. She is free to explore the treasures of the museum. The museum boasts of an extremely
valuable if not priceless blue diamond, known as the Sea of Flames. The diamond is said to have
some superpower: a person who keeps it is granted eternal life but those he loves are cursed
being doomed to live in misfortune.
In 1940, after the Nazis’s invasion of France, Marie-Laure leaves Paris, together with her
father, to find a refuge in Saint-Malo, where the girl’s great uncle Etienne lives. As it turns out, the
Sea of Flames or presumably one of the copies of the diamond are entrusted to Marie-Laure’s
father to prevent it from being seized by the Germans. The man hides the stone in the model of
the house belonging to Etienne. Sometime later, the Germans arrest him and his further fate
remains unknown. Marie-Laure is left in care of Etienne, her great-uncle, and the housekeeper.
Shortly after this event, a Nazi who hunts for treasure starts his chase after the diamond.
The parallel plotline takes the readers to the town of Zollverein in Germany. The main
character, Werner Pfennig, has no parents but has a preternatural gift to understand circuitry.
One day Werner and his sister Jutta find a broken radio. Having repaired it, the young boy hears
some Frenchman who is talking about science. This is how his enchantment with science starts.
Thanks to his extraordinary skills in radio mechanics and love of science, he finds himself in the

school which trains the military elite of the Nazi. Having graduated from the school, he joins the
Wehrmacht.
In 1944, the Allied forces land in Normandy, and the unit where Werner carries on his
military service is assigned to a special mission in Saint-Malo. Werner needs to find and kill a
mysterious person who sends broadcasts against the Nazi regime and this is where Werner and
Marie-Laure meet. It turns out that Etienne, the great-uncle of MarieLaure, transmits the
broadcasts for purposes of the French Resistance. Meanwhile, the search for the Sea of Flame
continues. We will not reveal the ending of the book. Let this pleasure of discovery be left for the
readers.
In his novel, Doerr creates an intricate plot to the point of intolerable suspense thus
keeping the readers’ attention up to the last page of the book. He travels back in time while
revealing the facts which make the story more and more intriguing. The tension is kept high up to
the end when the puzzle-box opens and the readers find the treasure inside. The novel is
absorbing the reader’s attention to the point that it is hard to stop reading until one finds out the
clue. This is a good choice for those who are on a holiday or travel a long distance trying to fill
up their spare time with thrilling reading.
As for the style of the book, it should be noted that it is quite relentless and dramatic.
There is a wide use of the epithets which make the novel sound rich and voluptuous to some
extent, although sentences often seem tobe short and abrupt. Doerr pays great attention to
detail which helps the readers to imagine the picture vividly to the point that one cannot wait
for the next turn in the lives of the main characters.

An Article Review on
“Roles of Sensitive Men”
by Gerald Thompson
The article “Roles of Sensitive Men” by Gerald Thompson that appeared in the magazine The
Watcher can be said to be an extended argument with gaping holes. Thompson presents
sensitive men as the new gatekeepers of the future, the ones that will lead the most influential
companies and make the greatest mark in the field of humanities. Thompson makes it all sound
like a new race of human beings will descend on our lonely planet. While the author has some
insight, much of the article is based on bias and speculation rather than actual research.
Thompson points to such modern influential figures as Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg,
NSA leaker Edward Snowden, and pop star Justin Bieber as examples of sensitive men ruling the
world currently. I can understand his insertion of Snowden and Zuckerberg, but Bieber’s addition
perturbs me. Thompson’s definition of a sensitive man is, “Men bold enough to express their
feelings openly and not be afraid of being defined as less than men” (Thompson 33). In Bieber’s
case, I believe he is not an activist or a revolutionary of any kind. He is only a product of the
American music industry that has designed him to be certain way to be sold to a specific
audience, which requires him to act in a manner that would make others think he is sensitive. This
is not actual sensitivity, but planned, forced sensitivity.
Thompson, beyond his definition of the subject matter and his explanation of why these three
previously-mentioned figures are exemplary examples of the rise of sensitive men, continued to
expound on his vision for the future. The author noted that, “Egocentric, arrogant men that have
been associated with power positions are going to leave the building. This will be a natural
demand by the public, and an organic course of economics” (Thompson 35). Though these
statements are admirable and I want to be an optimist, it appears to be more of a conjecture
than a basis of future reality.
There has been major social and economic upheavals that have caused the public,
especially the American public, to rise up in protest recently. We can speak of the Occupy Wall
Street demonstrations, the present NSA crisis, and the continuing economic decline that began
with the housing bubble. Yet still, with these factors weighing in, certainty should be more logical
than dreamlike. My own assertion is that “egocentric, arrogant men” are going to preserver in
their dominance, and may even tighten their grip. They will do so until they can longer control
the system they have created. I believe in this, as powerful people do not hand over their
resources without a fight, or without letting go until their final resource has been absolved. This is
the common psychological countenance of such men (Harriet 76).
The author concludes with varying degrees of success in that he allows some diplomatic
reasoning to creep into the foundation of his assertions. He surmises that, “Despite there being a
significant case for the ascension of the sensitive man, there are several factors that act against
this future. The cases are expansion of the crumbling global economy, a greater grip of
governmental control on its citizens in regard to surveillance, and increasing public focus on
non-humanitarian needs” (Thompson 34). I can ascertain from several reliable sources, namely
the journal Universal Economic Policy, that the global economy is in no shape to rebound. The
governmental grip tightening over the control of citizens through surveillance is the most
probable future (Sine 237). The point about the public’s attention being less on non-

humanitarian issues surprises me. I thought this happened on a daily basis—that the major news
organizations constantly direct our attention away from what is truly at hand and important to
our well-being (Sine 238).
The article “Roles of Sensitive Men” has a few merits, but is mostly a gaff that proposes a
future that is unlikely to happen. I give credit to the author for a unique take on the future of our
economic and social standing, yet I would warn readers to read the article with an examining
mind. In my perspective, there are many flaws inherit in the text. Thompson’s use of example
figures, shaky foundation of his vision, and a questionable conclusion makes this article less than
authoritative.

ACTIVITY 6: RATE ME
Now you are prepared to write your Article Review. Read the article that
follows, keep in mind the steps in writing a good article review and apply it in
writing one.
ARTICLE:
It is a hard thing to love a good man. A good man is not a nice man – he does
not do things to be nice, he does things because he has a moral code, a set of values
he prioritizes and will always do his best to make sure that his actions are in line with his
own personal standards. A good man will not do the easy thing or the convenient thing,
or even the thing that he wants to do; he will do what he knows to be the good thing.
He will never lie to you to spare your feelings or attend something because social
constructs deem it the courteous or polite course of action, and he will in fact do many
things that anger and frustrate you. But you cannot get mad at him, because after all,
he is a good man.
A good man is the man who will take his ex-girlfriends call while he’s with you,
because he knows that she has anxiety and would only ever call in an emergency, and
he is obligated as a good man to do whatever he can to help even when it makes
those around him uncomfortable.
A good man will put the wants of friends and family before his own needs, even
when he recognizes that his friends and family are being manipulative or selfish,
because a good man is always loyal. Worst of all, a good man will believe that his
unflinching honesty about not wanting a relationship will negate his increasingly
relationship-like actions, the kind of thoughtful deeds that a good man would deem
necessary in any and all interactions with a female, despite the confusion they would
cause.
And the lucky woman who gets to spend this time with a good man will not ever
get upset, because how could anyone ever be mad at such a good man? Any woman
knows that in today’s world of non-relationships, to be given the gift of such open
communication is a true blessing, even when it hurts.
Hone Your Creativity Cluster for ABM, STEM & ICT Strand 19 of 21
Grade 11, Fourth Quarter – MODULE 3, SY 2020-2021
always be courteous and gentle, which then makes getting over him essentially
impossible.
A good man will change you; you will bask in the warmth of hours upon hours of
meaningful conversation and the knowledge that your good man isn’t doing this for
any other reason other than his genuine interest in you and your thoughts. And so a
good man, despite his flaws and sometimes irritating habits towards goodness, has set
the bar so high that no chance encounter at a local pub or conversation on Tinder will
feel like they can ever come close to your good man.
And since you cannot get mad at a good man, you will not be able to get over
him either, and will instead sit at your desk writing a horribly clichéd piece about him so
as to distract yourself from texting him on his birthday, because you don’t want that
good man to feel bad for inspiring such feelings that would make you remember his
birthday, 4 months after your non-relationship has ended.
Feelings that he tried to keep you from having, because he is a good man, and
feelings that you could not have kept from having, because he is a good man. So it is
true that finding a good man is hard, but keeping one is even harder and losing one is
simply impossible – impossible to deal with, impossible to accept, and certainly
impossible to let go.
