Repatriation:
Repatriation often refers to the termination of an overseas assignment and return to the home
country, the country where the headquarters are located, or the home subsidiary from which he
or she was expatriated.

Repatriation Challenges

Everyone expects expats to go through a period of adjustment when they move to a new host
nation, but what about when they return home? As our expatriate told us, most expatriates
underestimate the possible hurdles of readjusting to life in their home country after an
international job. Many people experience both work-related and personal repatriation issues, as
she did.
Work-related
• loss of visibility and isolation
• changes in the local workplace
• transitioning to the re-entry role
• others undervaluing overseas experience
Personal
• making assumptions about how quickly you will fit back in
• having unrealistic expectations about life at home and how it has changed
• experiencing social readjustment as friend and family relationships change
• having difficulty supporting family members experiencing reverse culture shock.
Worryingly, most firms do not sponsor repatriation programs to assist assignees and their
families in adjusting to their return home.
